No that circled pic doesn't look bad, if it was, it would show on the coupling.
If the bearing in the case (the back cover and PTO shaft) is super smooth, turning it all directions and spinning it, then the issue is further in.

Ok well not sure my next move thanks all. Can you tell which way the sleeve goes back on it was off laying inside the rear and what weight oil and amount goes back in the rear.
I've got no books or anything on this tractor
Thanks

On the noise my guess would be the over-running clutch halves are clattering when there's no load, and any torque needed to turn the shafts is enough to quiet it down. The spring may have a missing snap ring or spacer. Its likely not doing any damage - but the engaging shifter is located forward in trans - so whether its worth chasing is up to you. The coupling (sleeve) fits either way. Fluid for trans is SUDT2 assuming the machine has HST. Take care, Dick B

Thanks Dick B do you have any idea how much it will hold ? And is the oil you mentioned the same same as 80/90 gear oil ?

The reason I ask when I drained the tractor what came out looked smelled and felt thick like 80/90 . I got this thing used about 1 1/2 ago so know none of its history or maintenance history.
Thanks

I can send you the WSM for the tractor that will have quantiles in it, Don't fill it with that quantity as it's still holding fluid in it, just fill using the sight glass or dip stick which ever it's equipped with.

An NO, SUDT2 is clear or almost clear and much much lighter weight than 80-90
Looking at your pictures the fluid I see looks like SUDT2.

Hi
Great thanks for info. I put it back together order the oil started it up to move and clean. Tried pto now seems fine or have I lost what little mind I had. This is without adding oil it wasn't dry and I ran it a few seconds.

The only thing I did differently was I ran the pto without installing the shaft and bearing for a few seconds to see if I could hear or see anything wrong it seemed fine .
I don't know maybe had a clutch stuck and running without shaft freed it up???

When I had that noise it turned out to be the ROPS rattling. Just tightened those two bolts where the joint allows it to fold down.

Always nice when a bothersome noise just goes away - hope it stays gone (y) .

You might be on to something, like bearing that is going out.
If the noise returns replace the bearing in the PTO output shaft cover!

Well yes and no. I pulled the rear shaft all the way out checked everything then started the tractor engaged the pto with shaft out for a couple minutes.
I put it back together added oil (if you do this be prepared with lots of drain buckets lots oil)
After everything was back in I started it and no problems as a matter of fact I just did 42 fence posts with the auger off pto worked great.

So not sure what I did but it's fine now. Sorry not a lot of help good luck
