rear brakes 185DT

Hi Gang,
The rear brakes are dragging most of the time, we have to pull the foot pedal up by hand. Squealing noises when starting out.
It doesn't look like the brakes are in the reduction gear housing so they must be in the differential area.
Would I have to pull the top off of the differential housing to get in to inspect them?

On my L1501 i lubed the points where brake rods enter case. Took about 5 times soaking it before they freed up. Been fine for a year now. But it hasnt seen rain since i bought it a couple years ago.

Also check to be sure you have good strong return springs on each side. Be sure pedel shaft under tractor is greased as well . To replace the brakes you only need to remove the axle housing , not the top cover.

Thanks for asking this, Tow'd. My L185DT does the same thing but to a lesser extent. If I use the brakes I have to remember to pull the pedals back up, otherwise they drag. No squealing on starting out, but I'll take another look at lubricating the shafts where they enter the case.

Hi Gang,
I drove the tractor about a half mile into the shop this morning and got some squealing from the rear brakes along the way.
When the rear end is jacked up the right rear wheel will spin free but I can't turn the left one.
I see the cross shaft for the brakes and have some homemade "P"oil (50/50 used ATF and acetone)soaking the ends.
I'll look into removing the axle tube as 007kubotaguy said to inspect the brakes

Great stuff that penetrating oil
I unhooked the cross over bar on the brake pedals and worked each pedal separately added more "P" oil and worked the pedals for 5 minutes and freed up that sticking left side brake.
I also saw that the linkage rod just before the adjuster on the right side was bent do both side brakes didn't work the same
all's good now

Glad you got you brakes figured out.

All I can say is you must have one large shop building, "I drove the tractor about a half mile into the shop this morning....."!
