2 or 3 years ago a teenaged girl in Texas was killed that way. I can't wrap my brain around it.

I've had a cellphone since the mid 80s (back when they were CAR phones). I had one of the earliest handheld phones, before there was such a thing as a smartphone. I'm not exactly a Luddite. But long before anybody told me to be careful, I was stopping conversations if I needed to enter a freeway, navigate a busy intersection, or anything other than just cruising down the highway. It's just not that difficult to say a quick, "Hold on." and PUT THE PHONE DOWN.

They walk among us. These folks also drive (or at least sit in the seat) and are also allowed to vote. Many of them even test well and hold higher degrees of education, but that still doesn’t change their cognitive ability. They probably should be wearing a helmet and strobe light.

Decades ago a local university student was killed when a snowplow hit her as she was crossing the road listening to her Walkman( yeah THAT long ago ). The city's knee jerk response...... reduce highway speed from 80 to 30 KMh, active RADAR for 3-4 years and install a pedestrian crosswalk 'light system'.

Same stretch of HIGHWAY ( 4 lane divided ,80 Kmh) ,I had to swerve into the fast lane to avoid hitting a mother on a bicycle towing her baby in a cart. I was going to stop to ask WHY she wasn't using the multimillion buck paved bike path behind TWO sets of chain link fences....but decided it'd be pointless....

I see people all the time Jogging or walking down the road.... completely oblivious to their surroundings.
I've had joggers basically running IN the road on a tight backroad.... earbuds in ... don't hear a thing.

Until I lay on the air horn ....

Also when I was running Boston produce market, I'd get there 3:00am and the local undocumented immigrants walking to work down a dark street with their face lit up from staring at the phone while walking.
good way to get shot/robbed/or raped.

Lack of common sense... I really believe this so called technology is making the world stupider.

it's an addiction.

and the chinese know it.

We just banned using mobile devices and walking at work. You can have them in you but you need to be in a Green zone and stand up against the wall if you are using your mobile or any computing device. Way too much stuff that can hurt or kill you. If you want to pay the stupid tax, do it somewhere else

thats a good idea.

I think more workplaces should have "device" bans.
smart phones and social media is the biggest waste of productivity in just about every field.

ever watch a construction crew? ever 5 minutes someone has their head in the phone.

not sure what goes on in schools today... but I'm sure it's a problem there also.

Curious...were they wearing some kind of vest with "Undocumented" written on it in reflective lettering so you could identify them?

At least you could determine they were not out stalking peoples pets!

LOL...sorry I could not resist!

People don’t use them on the line because if you are caught you lose PTO and then your job. We have tons of video surveillance of the lines and overall plant. We had a couple guys get written up for not waiting on a contractor and using a step ladder without training. Big sheets of sharp glass moving down the line and robots that do not care about soft squishy humans. You really need to keep your head on a swivel when you are out on the floor.

Heh. She sued the mall over that video being released to the public. It was a security camera. I don't recall the outcome.

I guess she didn't like her stupidity being put on public display.

Me? I'd have been more concerned about correcting my stupidity.

Guess that's why I don't walk into fountains or fire trucks very often.

I was in & out of that market for 10 years. I know just about everyone there.

Nearly every house has illegals/undocumented/asylum seekers... whatever you want to call it working for them.
it's commonplace especially since it's a sanctuary city... Even if ICE wanted to do anything about it, local law enforcement will not cooperate.

all that aside, Most of these people are real hard workers / great employees.

Some countries/ towns have installed illuminated stop/ walk lights in the sidewalk to prevent idiots from walking into traffic. Others have colored spotlights shining on the ground.
I say let the gene pool take care of it for us.

Arizona has a law banning cell phone use in cars while driving, (except hands free) but I see more morons on the phone now than ever before.
It is almost impossible to drive anywhere here without having someone drift into your lane, cut you off, fail to go when the traffic light turns green, or sit at a stoplight through an entire cycle while they jabber on the phone.
Part of the problem is that the law allows using the phone while stopped at a light, but that just means they start the call at the light, and continue it for the next 5 miles while paying little attention to their driving.
