Well... grabbed John Henry's end loader and strung up the mower deck like a hog being butchered... Power washed everything and proceeded to tear it down to see how bad was bad... A several neighbors dropped by the shop to witness the carnage. I finally got the gear box off and with the help of John Henry... pulled the belt drive pulley.
Now it was time of truth... we pulled the plugs to drain the gear oil... and NOTHING came out! The gear box was drier than a popcorn fart! The oil was there last week when I checked it.
I commenced to dissecting the gear box. After all the parts were laid out on the table it was clear as to what happened. The pulley shaft lost a bottom oil seal went out (it was hard and cracked). The oil drained drained down into the blade bearing cavity... leaving the bevel gears high and dry AND out of alignment mesh by over 1/8" .... in machined and shimmed setup... that is a country mile.
When this happens the results are as follows....
