Hey Fellas,

Was mowing on my LX2610 last night and hit a small stump. Didnt see the darn thing in the dark and it instantly shut the deck and tractor down. I took it out of PTO, Started the tractor backed up and went to put it back in engage PTO and it shut the tractor down again. The gear box is froze up it seems to me and stalls the tractor instantly. I cannot spin the mid pto shaft when I took the deck of last night or the mid blade. Going down now to finish taking gear box off and making sure I didnt break anything on the mid pto either.

My question is, is there a sheer key or pin in that box?
Would I be looking for a bent splindel?
Am I looking at a thrashed gearbox?

300 hours on tractor probably 150 on deck.

Things happen when we hurry. Was trying to get ready for a big party Saturday by mowing some in the dark and headlights stink on tractor. Didnt plan on that happening.

Thanks in Advance.

If the new decks are like the older ones, there is no shear pins. I'm betting you did grenade the gear box.

Try here with your Mid Mount Mower (MMM) model number, not the tractor model number. Should show you if there are any shears in the system, guessing there are some keys. Will also give you an idea how other parts are connected.

Kubota Tractor Corporation - Illustrated Parts List (kubotausa.com)

Good luck - - my sincere hopes that damage (if any) is restricted to the mower gearbox, and doesn't extend into the tractor's mid-PTO.

When I looked up the parts for the Kubota snow blower, it originally showed the gears as being available as a repair part. A couple of years later, they only sold the entire gearbox. Seems that they don't want to sell just parts, but only complete assemblies.

You can still purchase all the parts for the gearbox, but they are salty. The gears alone are $500 for the set. As stated above, the deck should be the least of his concern. Shock load that brings an engine at full RPM to a dead stop will cause fatigue to the tractors drivetrain. If the stump was hit with the outer spindles, the belt will act as a shock absorber, a direct blow to the center spindle is bad.

I had a similar problem with my son's MMM - I could have swore the gear box was locked up - it took a bit to find that the blade was bound and taking it off and replacing fixed the problem.

I would remove the drive belt and see if all spindles free spin. Maybe- just maybe the blade is binding that hit the stump and can be replaced.

I am just getting back to this. I had a bad upper repsirtory infecton and was down. Pretty sure had walking pneumonia. Could barly do anything. Well. Anyways.

The stump bent the deck into the outside and mid blade. Not allowing either to move. I took blades off pounded everything out. and they spin fine now and everything is back in place.

Quick qeustion, I bought Lucas SAE80W-90 gear oil. This will work in the gearbox correct. I know they asked for 90w. Just making sure.

Thanks

Good to know that the gearbox was not the problem. That oil will be fine too.

I tend to use mine in pretty wide range of temp. In fall, it would not be unheard of for me to be out mulching leaves from our oak trees into December pretty deep (as long as just cold not snow). My oaks don't drop their leaves (or begin to) until mid to late Novemebr. So I can be out there in 20 to 35 deg weather. So my last gearbox drain fill was with Lucas 75W-140 Does not seem to be any issues. Just thought, the wider range would be good. Though FWIW, I never just "crank up" the engine and throw the PTO lever.
I always will warm the engine a bit (maybe 5 or 10 min at fast idle) then ease the throttle up a little until I can just engage the PTO, then I will let the mower run like that for a few before I throttle up and put it to work.
I am a firm believer in letting things get flowing before I put them to work. Just like my big, fine, and ancient body. Gotta get that blood flowing :D
