On days like yesterday and today when all I can do with my Kubotas is think about what I want to do, I get out the lathe and play.

Nice bowl.

I tried woodworking, way back in the day, but it did not "grab me" like metal work does.

Since I only have one shop area, the whole idea of "sparks and wood shavings" gave me a bad feeling.

I just really started "playing" with wood in the past 2 years when I retired. I used to only have to look at wood and it would split LOL. Bowls are my favorite , but I've turned some bud vases from some of the branches from trimming trees around the property. My wife never seems to run out of ideas for things to try.

I built almost all the furniture in my house from trees that grew in our Backyard. I hibernate every winter in my basement woodshop. Unlike working with metal that all looks the same, you never know what's inside a log until you saw it. I never tell my wife what I am making her until it's done. My shop scares her so she won't go in to peek.

My father in law got into wood turning and he made so many different types of bowls that he ran out of people to give them to. He had them all over the home, and when he passed, my wife and her sister diveded them up. Now we have them all over our home, and because of the sentimental value, my wife has a difficult time giving them away.
My brother was a hobby wood furniture maker but I never got anything that he made.

Back in high school I loved making small bowls etc on the lathe. I only minimal time in the shop as an elective class. One nice thing about working with metal is the ability to fix errors. Although in metal work "it's easier to grind it off than it is to grind it back on", it CAN be welded back on.

Wood is living and seasonally changes size based on grain where metal only changes size equally with heat is the biggest difference I find.

Sorta in the same boat. My wife has first refusal on anything I make (her rules). Our house is only 28' x40' so not much room for "stuff". Funny how not much of what I turn makes it to my daughter's house next door.

Unlike working with metal that all looks the same, you never know what's inside a log until you saw it.

I like this observation, and agree with it. I'm not very proficient, but have managed to turn out a few nice things.

I had done fabrication for so long, welding things on, drilling things out, grinding things off. But then I was introduced to blacksmithing and it was this incredible new world where you can literally move and shape the metal any way you like.

My artistic side really took to that, and I will argue you can get some nice shapes and textures out of steel. But nothing comes free. Not taking anything away from wood, I love both. Just an alternate perspective.
