A friend of mine was cleaning out a garage which contained a bunch of old electronics. He was intrigued by this device, I think it's some kind of tuner. But, as a mechanical engineer, I was more intrigued by the two intermittent movement mechanisms, a geneva and a partial gear. The Collins tag and the 27.5vdc motor make me think it may be aeronautic related. Anybody recognize it?

well it sure looks like a motor driven variable inductor. Collins did make a load of radio equipment for aeronautics and for the services.
Probably part of some tuning circuit.

Correct on the ID. It looks like one used in aircraft with around 150 watt capability. The value would relate to what someone would pay for a working unit replacement. Not likely as current products are much cheaper, faster, and broader frequency range. Ones that are advertised out there run around $400, but tend to be 12v. Nice nostalgia.

code on the motor appears to say 'made in 31st week of 1978'.......with yet another use for the venerable DB25-P connector !
