Question about state Summit Hydraulics valves when box is opened.

So I ordered a hydraulic valve from Summit. They offered using Amazon Pay for checkout, so I decided to just go on Amazon and get it there. Same price, and clearly still from Summit. When the valve arrived, I was surprised to find that the plastic bag enclosing the valve had already been completely cut open. There were oil stains around the box and the valve was clearly oily. I didn't know if it was hydraulic fluid or not. Could be lubricating oil of some kind, sure. But the bag the valve was in having been clearly already opened by someone not me made think this wasn't a new valve, but possibly a returned valve.

I started the return process and summit contacted me through Amazon saying "Yes, the bag is cut open, we do that to inspect the valve before shipping it on to you". I've never heard of that before.

So if you've gotten a valve from summit recently...was it the same way? Already cut open?

I'm happy to keep the valve if it's actually new. Just not what I'm used to seeing in a "new" part.

Thanks.

Amazon won't let me buy anything ,but friend does and has had a HORRIBLE time with them.
I do NOT believe Summit would ship something OILY and NOT sealed. If, IF, that valve was inspected, there would be a tag on it, inspector's name/number, and then SEALED 'for shipping purposes'.
I think you've got a used, returned part.Hopefully you took pictures as you opened it..
I would not use it for sure.

Last 'oily' box I did use had 60% TNT in it...great fun....

Here's what I saw when I undid the bubble wrap surrounding it.

Over 20+ years, my experience with buying from Amazon has been nothing short of outstanding.
My friends also all report nothing but positive experiences.

You:..... "Amazon won't let me buy anything"
Weird!
Why would that be?

hmm, ripped open, didn't use a knife !

re: amazon. They're idiots ! I tried to buy Kenda tires 3 years ago for my BX23S. can't, even though a call to Kenda in Ohio(?) said LOTS in stock. It took me 3 hours to figure out what the Amazon 'manager' couldn't. Their computer sees me as being in Canada, automatically refuses me to place an order.done. Had they allowed me to get to 'shipping details', I'd have used my Michigan address for delivery. Kenda confirmed NO problem with that.
Meanwhile I can order microcomputers from a USA company, and they come via UPS ,from Thailand in 7-10 days to my Canadian adress...
sigh

Last week I received a 'brand new' Ego chainsaw from amazon. Similar deal - box not sealed and when I opened it there was oil all over the bottom of the saw. Back in box, start return process, received a replacement in 1 day.

I have purchased a dozen or more valves from Summit and the plastic is usually (always???) open as you describe. Instructions and packing slip sometimes oil stained. Never gave it much thought and never had a problem. I buy direct from Summit - no tax and no shipping.

Heh, thanks, that was what I was looking for. If that's a normal part of their "inspection" process, then I figured someone else here would have experienced it too. I didn't mean the thread to become an Amazon referendum....

I'll note the only reason I went to Amazon to get it was because there was an Amazon Pay option at the checkout on the Summit Hydraulics site, so I figured they had a presence there. The Amazon Summit storefront is legit, and the price was the same (also no shipping, same as directly from Summit).

Sadly every thread here becomes a referendum on something.....

I have no idea why Summit does it but its common. The instructions are all the same. If its a straight pass thru I sometimes print a clean copy off the website and put the valve in my own 4 mil parts bag.

Ya, I totally agree. Heh, if the goal was to make sure I wasn't disappointed by the condition of the valve when I opened it, they kinda failed that! Overall, honestly, my whole concern was that the valve somehow hadn't come from Summit after all, ya know, being Amazon and all. I've no doubts about that now though, so I'll accept their word that it's good and new. Their reputation for quality parts is pretty well known, so I have to forgive some weird packaging.

They sell at rock bottom price and they know their product and describe it fully. They provide excellent guidance on valve selection and proper hydraulic plumbing. That sets them apart from the competition.

They have a well established track record with me. Not a single issue over the last 10 odd years and I could not care less about their choice in packaging.

Summit Steve was very polite in messages through Amazon and explained it all to me, so I cancelled the return and can now treat the valve as an accepted part of the tractor family.

I recently got a Summit valve via Amazon. Bag was open; everything covered with fluid. But valve worked fine and did not appear to have ever been used. That said, not a Summit fan.

Summit sells mostly imported stuff, thats the reason for the "rock bottom" prices and why they "inspect" items first. That said, its quite common for valves and such to have oil in them from the manufacturer since most are tested in some fashion.

Ar one point Summit's valves were coming from this source but that appears to have changed. Magisters still do and they proudly acknowledge it.
