PVC mistakes... anyone else do this?

If you thought that what you had was glue and intended to make the joint without cleaner, you were still asking for possible future trouble. The cleaner cleans and softens the pipe and fitting so that the glue can do it's job. My advice is to remove the joint/connection and replace it with a properly cleaned and glued connection.

I did get a new filter and do that, why they made a filter with glue on ends idk.... it's dumb.

The cleaner is normally acetone based. Some add dyes to show you where you've 'cleaned'. Acetone will dissolve and soften the top layer of the PVC, but eventually, the PVC will shrink (especially if there are any temperature cycles) and separate, and needless to say, will no longer pass the 65PSI test. The glue hardens, and bonds the two softened surfaces together as it dries. The glue itself is PVC, dissolved in solvent (mostly acetone/ether). By putting it on the pipe and fitting, it creates a bond between the liquid pvc (glue) and the pipe and the fitting, making the seal and giving the strength.

It's Ok. I had on my super grippy bare feet any time I was running around the pools, and there was no water in the pool to drown in. Yet. I was very experienced at running around pools. Especially when one customer's semi-vicious 180 pound St. Bernard (can we say Cujo?) decided it was a good day to give me a bad time. Stupid dog. I'd just petted and played catch with him the day before.

Well, I don't think I petted or played with anyone's ex-wife around a pool, though a few of the pool owners were prime candidates for such activities.
