I have a question and I think I know the answer but I wanted to toss it out there and see what happens. I picked up one of the RK 5 gallon race car fuel, not intended for fuel or potable water cans, Nice heavy plastic, the problem is the spout which is a piece of maybe tigon tubing. it works well enough how ever it is pron to kink. So I was thinking the can lid has a 1/2 inch pipe fitting , so why not use PVC to make a short or a spout with a valve, cause that can is heavy when it is filled. Any thoughts on how to modify it?

PVC will not interact with diesel - and as for your 1/2 pipe - glue a 45 degree end on it and then a very short piece with an end cap to close it off.
that way when you pick it up - the angle of the dangle will be correct and will not have to turn the container up and spill.

The hardware stores in my area have "replacement" nozzles for the old style fuel cans that didn't have the new EPA regulation stuff on them I picked up a couple and they screwed right onto my fuel containers. They are that flexible corrugated plastic and come with a screen, screw on cap, and cap retainer. It cost like 7 bucks. So it might be an easier option.

I use a 12vdc fuel pump to refuel my sawmill and tractors.
Yup, and a PVC pickup tube goes into the fuel jug.

I think I may have found the answer ,,, EZ Pour cap replaces the racing can cap with one that takes a normal fuel spout

Glad we are on the subject. I filled up my plastic gas cans the other day. The older one with the better cap is gonna have to be replaced.
Set the can down in the garage and noticed it leaked some fuel above the handle.
Looked at it a little closer, picked the can up set it back down while looking really closely at it. Thats when I realized the seam in the middle of the handle split 
I've used most of the gas, topping up the zero turn. Once it's empty, ill toss the can, but keep the spout.
Maybe I can find another can the spout fits on. It won't fit the newer can with the crappy spout.

dunno about diesel but my cans' pvc spouts are all hardened up. Still flexible but not very much. About the same as those corrugated things
only one can has diesel in it for the tractor and it lasts me forever i use the same spout, just pull it off of one of the other cans to pour fuel into the tractor.
maybe it's the methanol that's made the spout hard who knows. I run a tiny bit of nitro in the fuel for a little while but I think the spout was already hardened up as I remember
one thing that I will have to do soon is to buy a non pvc air hose. i'd like to have a discussion with whoever thought pvc was a good idea for air hoses

Yes it is and I have been very pleased with it. It takes ~30 seconds to empty a 5 gallon fuel can.
Mine has been on a 55 gallon drum for a couple years. Recently moved it to the new shed and installed a plug on the 4240. Couldn't get the 4240 into the old shed and the hose wasn't long enough to reach out to fuel it up
