When windows 10 can run my kubota by remote as 8 the movie interstellar. I will upgrade then. Until then I am sticking with windows 7. I got an AAS degree in computer science in 1999 when windows 98 was just coming out. Windows 8 on friends computer is why I quit learning new OSes. Now if they could come out with a android app for tractors.... otherwise forums work for me for help.

Thanks HickoryNut, that's been bothering me. I haven't actually taken the time to look it up until now, but for everybody's information, I found this website which spells it out;
http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system

I'm not saying w10 is all around bad. I'm sure for many many people it is a worthwhile upgrade, but for me and mine, I would lose the main functionality that I'm looking for.

ShaunRH, I function on the premise, "there is no such thing as a free lunch"! So your example of a free car just makes me wonder why is it FREE?

I'm going to drive my old car (computer) 'till the wheels fall off, and I'm sure the next one will have to have all the bells and whistles to function, so I'll have to buy what they sell.

Very interesting,,, but you still didnt answer my question,, DO I NEED IT AND WHY???
Yes you need it, because you need to keep learning and take on new challenges.;) If you were into taking the easy way out you would sell your tractor, sell your old orchard, and sit on the porch. Riding the tractor keeps you active and alert so you can take on a new Windows challenge every couple of years.:D

I take on the windows challenge every ten years or so. I run the puter till it's not supported anymore then blow it up :D Then I take another five years to figure out the new operating software and to be able to get around comfortably

Go Mac!

My iMac just turned 8 years old. How many Windows machines out there are running at 8 years? And mine does everything just like it did when it was new. My DVD burner went bye-bye so I ordered a new one, as well as a new HD, and doubled the memory. Ran me $400 for everything and when I installed the OS on the new drive, the software asked me, "Do you have a back-up drive you would like to use?" I plugged in my "Time Machine" back-up drive and 3.5 hours later, 99% of my old content was right there.

Every program.
Every e-mail.
Even my screen saver.

This machine is running like new and I plan to use it another three or four years before getting a new one. Zero viruses or malware. Try running Windows OS for 12 years. I bought this Mac off ebay and my wife's off CraigsList. We saved a ton of money. Parts are relatively inexpensive and readily available. I will never have another Windows machine, ever.

I won't start the holy war here, but just so you know, a lot of Windows PC's are still running 12 years later. Any well maintained PC and OS will last for a long time. Apple only offers N-1 support for their OS. Microsoft supported Windows XP until this year, 15 years after its creation. Macs are no longer immune to Malware and are now the #2 malware target. Their immunity died when they got popular enough to start targeting. Apple has had to learn some nasty lessons from Microsoft over the last 5 years. No OS is immune to malware. They are even hacking cars now.

I've been in the computer industry for over 35 years now. I started on Apple II's and TRS-80's. I've watched machines and operating systems come and go for decades. The only thing I have learned is that there is no 'king' Operating System or Hardware, just what is current. I have been a technician to both Macs and Windows PC's. They both work just fine.

If you've found a system that works well for you and speaks in your internal language, then consider yourself successful. Touting one platform over the other is one of the biggest wastes of time I've ever seen people indulge in. Use what you like but there is little to be gained by demeaning a different product. Doesn't matter if it's a computer or a tractor.

I used the IBM platform for 15 years.
I used the Mac platform for the last 8 years.

My experiences with the Mac have been nearly painless compared to insanely frustrating times with my IBM -as a user.

Draw what conclusions you prefer. Nothing demeaning there, just a couple of decades of experience.

Happy Computing.

I've found the opposite. The Mac was practically unusable. My brain just doesn't work the way they thought it should.

my dear wife bought me a new laptop for Christmas,as my old garage sale one (5 dollars lasted 5 years) running xp finally croaked.
I have never been so disgusted with a computer program in my entire life!

I use it for some business stuff, but haven't been able to,as I get terribly frustrated when it does stuff I don't understand.
like I need to be logged in as admin to change certain things or even update.aparrently I needed to verify I am admin on my own computer.
and the verification process is/was a farce.
so finally I got it waiting for update to 10 which I will gladly do.

windows 8 is a top notch fail in my books.
I would downgrade to 7 if I could.

**update-10 is loading right now, will know soon enough if it was a good idea.

About 9 hours to download. Two to install. Used it for a couple hours and its better than 8.1, i think. At least stuff doesent slip away and i no longer need to hunt for it. That being said, dns installer piggybacked its way in and a stinkin adbot follows me around. Deleted/removed it, hope its gone.

XP to Windows 8 is a HARSH JUMP by any stretch. With no Vista or Win 7 in between, yeah, I feel your pain sir.

Microsoft has a lot invested in helping you not feel the same pain with Windows 10, you can train, on-line, for free with the new OS.

To CCRay:

I fully understand, and there is no one-size-fits-all OS. I am a firm believer in advising people to check out all the operating systems. With Android not being a desktop OS, you are usually left with Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Some folks are happy with a simple tablet, Mac or Android, others want more horsepower. The market has changed a great deal in the last 10 years. It really demands more study by the buyers now.

Thanks Shaun for the explanations, they are very helpful. Have been wondering when to cut the cord with the uni's stuff, still running my old Dell Latitude which after the virus, the powers that be allowed the IT dept to upgrade from XP to 7. I didn't have an account to charge the $94 to...and they wouldn't take a check before that. But not my old trusty software, caught in a labyrinth of rules so I can't pay for new stuff, but they won't put old licenses back on etc. The trouble with 15 years or so of IT support and imaged computers is that one loses one's ability to function independently. You'll laugh but my first "personal" lab computer use was with one that you had to toggle in the initial startup stuff in hexadecimal code, and used paper tapes. Then decks of cards. I decided it was faster to analyze data the old fashioned way with that one. Nowadays it is more which is the easiest way to get something done and it is less fun to play with new toys unless of course the new toy is a tractor :D

Sheepfarmer-

One great thing about computers is that they evolve. All the things that used to be a royal pain in the tuckus to work on are now pretty much automated, no matter what the OS (Most flavors on Linux are still very manual but some are automated, like Mac OS which is just a super Unix/Linux variant).

The latest desktops have power that Supercomputers of 20 years ago could only dream of. Then people go the more simple route with their iPad, other tablet and just email and do social stuff, no need for the horsepower.

That is why the research is so important, there are so many more choices. To Cave Creek Ray's point, he found something he really likes and like many Macophiles shouts his joy from the rooftops. There's nothing overly wrong with that, but where I get a bit frustrated is when perceptual information, that is mostly myth, gets added into the mix in order to find converts. That is why it's called the Holy War as computer choice tends to come across just like religious choice. I certainly support Ray's enthusiasm for the digital world, however my approach is all about finding the best solutions for people and fit them with the proper computer.

If Macs are what you are into, Ray's method is the best fiscally. Many Macophiles are ravenous adopters. They buy the latest Apple item every year, new iPad, new iPhone, new laptop, new desktop. Many sell the recent 1-2 year old items on ebay or Craigslist for a song, or at least down at new Windows PC prices. If you are on a budget and want Mac, that is the way to go.

Having said that, with powerful PC's down at the $300 mark for the basic system, it's scary cheap for a PC that will last you 4-8 years. You can also go WAAAAAY overboard and build custom systems that have $10,000 of components in them and rival entire blade processor systems for pure horsepower.

The PC world is huge, and from smart watch (Calling Dick Tracy) to the ever expanding world of Artificial Intelligence pursuits, it's not getting any smaller.

Yes, I have to confess that I was looking at the ads for smart watches last night. :D I am always missing calls and texts because my phone is in my backpack or on the table and I didn't hear it, and don't notice it is blinking for hours, so a notification on my watch would be good. And it is hard to adjust to the idea that I am not doing enough image processing any more to justify another latitude...champagne taste, beer pocket book...they do last well though, 8-10 years on the two I've had.

Thanks again!

That's an awesome episode CCRay. I never would've thought of that process.

I have not had confirmation of this but I watched a program once that said that Alexander Bell's first phone attempts were not analog, but digital, based on the idea to use the existing telegraph lines. Instead of Morse, machines would encode and decode pulses and give audio out from audio in. He felt the technology was possible but too difficult and perfected the analog system, patenting it only hours before Elisha Gray patented his. Had he conquered digital back then, we might be living in a very different world today.

Another interesting historical tid-bit, the first fax machine was invented in 1843... and here we thought it was a flash in the pan technology of the 1980's and 1990's... :D

I made the jump to Win 10 the other day.

The jury is still out whether it was a good idea, but not sure if I'm smart enough to know better.:eek:

I guess the fact that I can write this post is a good sign, but the new browser is a little bit of a challenge to find "stuff.":p
