IMHO you do upgrade nearly for free.

copy all the files you want (not programs) to DVD or better yet a thumb drive.

Then get a free copy of linux Fedora and download it to DVD on a friend's computer.

Install latest Linux Fedora on the most powerfull machine you have whose problems seem to be corruption of data. Maybe even swap in a new hardrive first.

There will be a learning curve at first but it basically things run the same when it comes to what button to push.. where things fall on the screen etc. as Win XP. but far more powerful. The office program is also free (as is most all of linux programs) and reads/edits most all MicroSoft produced documents.

It is a safe bet that your hard disk drive went bad on your computers. You may just have to replace the hard drive and reload the operating system. When you bought the computers they probably came with a recovery disk. that disk has the operating system on it as well as the original programs and drivers. A new hard drive can be bought from places like Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot, or Fry's for around $50.00 or less.

Replacing the hard drive is a very easy task that only takes about 5 minutes. The time consuming part is reloading and configuring the operating system and programs. it will also start doing updates and that most probably will take hours if you have MS Windows of any version. One thing that you will want to do when you take the computer cover off is to blow out the dust from it.

Skeets, maybe you need a diesel engine for your computer... Wait I got that backwards, Bill Gates said he would put a computer operating system in our vehicles.:p I guess if you get one of your computers running you need to use it to computerize your tractor. Just think how much better the OPC system would work with a computer attached to all the safety switches. I bet you could program the ROPS to automaticly fold down to avoid trees. Just don't program it to fold down on your head.

I have had Dell Latitudes (2) but over the last 15 years which tells you how long they last, my current one is still going strong after 8 or so. They are built to be heavy duty business laptops, and are pretty bulletproof. I wanted to replace this one which belongs to the U, but new ones are pricey. My Australian cousin just retired from his job as an IT guy, found that you can get refurbished Latitudes for about $300, so that is what he got. Not sure where he ordered it from, but I am considering that. They have docking stations for them so easy to put into your current keyboard and screen set up.

Look at iPad (or similar) for most of what you probably do. Easy to use, no virus attacks, an air printer makes it so you can print. Some things just don't work though so keep one PC to use when you need.
