My laptop will freeze like that if I open the lid within a few seconds of closing it. Closing it puts it in hibernation, and if I don't wait until that process is complete then the only way to bring it back to life is to unplug it and remove the battery for a few seconds.

Upgrading from Vista to Win 7 made no difference.

Skeets, Your pc may also have a Dell application on it call 'Command Update' it will be under the Dell program group. Run it until it stops pulling and installing updates. Its easier than going to their site and picking and choosing updates.

When we put a new system out it takes a solid day for the machine to pull and install all the Dell and windows updates before we can start putting all our business apps on them.
