Total frustration here this morning, and of course, your right. I should have included all pertinent information in my last thread.
Its a new Dell desktop all in one unit a sexy looking machine I think.

Anyway I started getting the blue window of death saying that the computer has encountered an error and is shutting down and restart, this has happened several times over the last couple weeks.
Contacted Dell they say its a windows problem with out side contractors writing parts of the OS.
OK so how do I fix it, well thats not our problem you have to contact Microsoft for the answer ( one hell of a customer service Dell has huh). Microsoft has not answered any of my emails and there is no number to call at least non that I can find.

Now as of last night as of 2300 hours everything was working.
This morning I got up and the window that comes on when the puter is first started is showing.
Like it had restarted again all by it self.
I lost all my favorites, web pages email, everything, its like I just took it out of the box.

Now all morning I have been trying to get things back, and yes I did back everything up on a thumb drive, however it will not recognize it as a viable drive.
Back to square one, I down loaded google to make it my default, but it will not recognize( google) it as the default, it did before.
And not being a putter geek this is all very frustrating to an old man, talk about bikes, horses, guns. and fishing the great lakes for salmon Im ok, but these things not so much.
And tech support cant seem to understand that not everyone is a geek. So thats whats going on, any help will be gladly received.

Man, I can't help you one bit, but I can have sympathy for you.

I'm having trouble with my land line phone. Went online to get some info. Called the company number listed, got someone in the Philippines. I asked them how the weather was there, just for pleasantries. All they wanted to do was set up a work order. That is, if I understood her correctly. Very broken English.

Skeets, I'm so simple with a computer, I have a friend in Ft. Collins, Co. who I give a call to and get him on my computer with TeamViewer and he takes over. I just set there and watch him move the mouse so fast I can't keep up with what he's doing. Sometimes I get off my cell phone and let him keep on tinkering or downloading or whatever he's doing and he'll call me when he's done. Pretty simple...just pay him with PayPal...and keep on hoeing!

I once took out my harddrive and mailed it to him (all with his direction step by step). He ordered a new Samsung SSD. I had to look it up to see what it was...solid state drive. He put all my "stuff" and the new drive and mailed it to me. I installed it and he made sure it was working correctly, then he destroyed the HD I had sent him.

Maybe someone on the forum does that stuff? You need to find you a working partner to keep all the electronic gizmos working.

By briefly reading it seems it may be indeed a hardware problem.
If possible can you exchange this for another new one?
I've worked with several weapons companies in my past life and they were all quick to blame the ammunition for any problems with a gun and to which in turn the ammunition companies blamed the weapon: Sound familiar?

What is a blue screen error?

When Windows encounters certain situations, it halts and the resulting diagnostic information is displayed in white text on a blue screen.

Blue Screen errors occur when:

Windows detects an error it cannot recover from without losing data
Windows detects that critical OS data has become corrupted
Windows detects that hardware has failed in a non-recoverable fashion

Another method if you want to speak with Microsoft support is to go to https://partner.support.services.microsoft.com/en-us/contact/menu/software/windows/setup/ and select 'Schedule a call'. You will be asked to either sign in to your Microsoft account or create an account. When you are finally logged in there will be a menu in the upper left corner of the screen with some information for you to complete to schedule a call back. Then select 'confirm' at the lower right of the screen.

Got a new iphone yesterday. So bAckup old phone and proceed to load it into new phone. Nope. Itunes needs to update. So update and continue on original quest. Nope, old phone needs latest update. Back out and connect to wifi because it wouldnt update through laptop and itunes. Ok done resume quest, backup old phone to itunes. Done. Connect new phone. Nope. Needs latest update in order to proceed. Back out and connect to wifi and get latest update. Done. Connect and start loading old phone into new one. Nope. Need to reset new phone.
Feel any frustration building yet? Gettin there.
Ok reset, connect and transfer stuff on to new phone. Should have taken 20-40 minutes. No. 2-1/2 hours.

Now new phone needs password to access email. Out of 3 accounts i remember 1
So now play forgot password game. Started at 6:00 pm, beat down all the barriers and by 11:00 i almost got it all beat.

Aint technology great? Then there was my point of sale machine in shop that connects through my phone, had to configure that. Was only a couple years since i last did it, now where did i put that manual?
Another hour for that.
Point is
I didnt give up.

And out of all this, my laptop (win10) gave me the least grief.

You need a clean version of win10 on disc from microsoft.
When i went from 8-10 something came in with it and locked mine up too.

Windows 8 and windows 10 have 2 options when you do the system restore from within windows. One they call a refresh, and the other clears everything back to the day you got it. The refresh keeps your files, but you have to reinstall any programs.

When you get the blue screen, it will usually say something like blah blah has detected a critical fault in (file name) at address 00xblah blah...

That file name and address tells the computer person roughly where the crash is coming from. And if you can get back into Windows after the reboot, there is a program called event viewer which let's them see more about what happened.

If you are still getting this blues reen after now having reset your computer. I would tend to lean towards looking at hardware. Since you just cleared out any software you had.

Your photos (and all other personal data like tax-forms) should ALWAYS be stored in at least two places. (I put them on separate hard-drive AND burn them to DVD to store into safe-deposit-box at bank) There are some thing you NEVER wish to loose even if your house burns to the ground.

Also, as mentioned above in previous appends, that "blue screen of death" is often due to HARDWARE issue.... in such a case, a 'system restore' will do nothing to fix the computer itself.

Wife's new laptop has win 10. Spent a little time on it helping her out with it. Seems like Windows went out of there way to make it difficult to use. And not a big fan of not being able to use it while it's downloading an update. Seems really clunky to use as well.

Keep us posted on what you find out with it :D

I have a feeling that the more its used the more cooperative it gets. Not necessarily true, but my last couple times on the dell the less i disliked it.
