How much oil will come out when you pull the strainer screen on the trans- hydraulic system to clean it without draining the oil. I just want to check and clean it without changing the oil in the tank.

Dead thread revival.

Thinking about doing a screen cleaning in the coming months, to dispose of 'build sparf' that is common. The BH will be off the machine and so will the 3pt.

Has anyone done the shop vac on the dip stick opening so the screen can be pulled minimizing fluid loss?
What diameter is the opening so I can cork it? It would be nice to shut the shop vac off while I slowly work (molasses has nothing on me).
Any thoughts about tilting the tractor to the right? I suspect it will not do anything but it is a passing thought.

Drain all the fluid before pulling the screen, as others have said if the screen is plugged it's time to change fluid! ;)

I'd like to not drain any of the fluid, if possible. Hence my desire to minimize or prevent any from exiting while I have the strainer pulled.

I do not expect the strainer to be plugged, I expect to find metal shavings from the manufacturing process and bits of excess sealant, the stuff I normally see on a strainer the first time.

Way I figure it you have two options.

1) Drain the fluid
2) Roll the machine on its side:D

Just so you know, I drained out the fluid to do a change with some fresh UDT2, drained, replaced the filter - went to take the screen out and still more fluid came pouring out. Even after I left the drain plug out for a good 20 mins.

So put something under the screen when you pop it out.

I'm at 50 hours. Screen wasnt bad, but did have some metal shavings on it (always nice to see *shudder*)

Nice and clean now and with the trans fluid swap the HST is a bit quieter

Always a good idea, to drill a hole and thread it in such a position, that ALL the oil drains out, before cleaning the screen. Of coures this insight is free, and arrived at after cleaning the screen, the first time...:D:D

If you don't want to replace the fluid, I see nothing wrong with draining and refilling with the same fluid. This of course would require you to assure it does not become contaminated with debris in the process. Clean containers and strain before refill should work fine in my opinion.
