Hi Gang,

We have some serious sounding problem inside the guts of our 1801dt (185) 4x4 tractor.
I drained all the fluids looking for nasty parts in the oil.
None found so I want to remove the whole top housing that has the 3 point hitch arms to look at the differential gears. I removed all the bolts and two nuts that hold it down . I tried using a slide hammer but didn't want to get carried away. It seems pretty tight , Am I missing something?
I copied the repair manual but can't find where I "stored" it.
Any help would be appreciated
thanks
Hank

Fine blade putty knife in the seam will help split it.

I'll send you a link to download another copy of the L185 manual.

DT,

My L3800 had the 3pt valve replaced. I went over and took pictures of it all apart. The tech told me when I went to pick it up that they don't use a seal for that cap, but rather silicone RTV. Getting them apart will take some digging along the seal edge as Wolfman said.

Remember that any seal knocked into the tranny will have to be fished out or drained with a fluid service. My tech ran my machine an hour after the repair and then changed the hyd filter, as insurance.

This morning I got at the 3 point hitch arm assembly and with a few well placed taps up on the 3 point hitch arm's shaft with a BFH it came loose.
Everything looked nice inside so I put it back together.

I looked over the rest of the tractor and found the 5 bolts that hold the front drive axle were real loose and one was missing.
A couple new metric bolts and it is tight again.
I'm hoping having the front axle assembly loose like that was the cause of my nasty noise.
I'm waiting for my UDT oil to get here.
Does the front and rear reduction gear housings get 80-90w gear oil?
cheers
Hank

No, UDT in the rear as it is the same as the rest of the system.
and either UDT or 80w 90 in the front.
