PTO Tiller ?

I'm trying to decide which to get. Tiller or disc harrow to go behind my 3301. I've never used or seen a PTO tiller In use . I only garden about 3/4 acre along with 24 grapevines and 20 fruit trees. New both about same $ unless it's got LP on the label but I've found a LP 72in tiller for $3K but don't know new price..
I know what I can do with a disc ( long story why I no longer have ) & walk behind tiller. I need ya'jjs thoughts

Most disc harrows (not bog disc) are intended to till previously plowed or otherwise loosened soil.

Unless you plan to first plow, a tiller is usually a better option.

For 3/4 acre I’d go with the tiller. Should work well with your HST tractor as you can maintain constant PTO RPM and set ground speed at whatever is giving good results.

If you had a gear drive and many acres, answer might be different but as SDT stated, tiller is usually all you need to work up a good seed bed. Harrow is more of a plow, disc, drag process to get to a final seed bed.

You have a tractor quite capable of running a tiller, and it will de a better job mixing the soils and prepping the beds than a disc will. You can also use it for mixing in things like Peat, manure, etc. that you cant with a disc.

My vote is for a tiller.

I use the harrow first on virgin sod to somewhat break it up, follow up with a pass of the tiller. Finish with chain harrow.

If you can only get 1 get the tiller.

Rototiller, hands down....
I used to subsoiler,plow,disc,harrow,rototill leave a day in between.
now just plow and rototill

A 'trick' for the garden plot, ALWAYS add back what you take. EVERY fall ADD compost,manure,fish guts,clippings, etc.

Last spring I put in a new 3/4 acre lawn from scratch. I used my box blade first to pull out all the rocks then used it to spread 2000lbs of limestone and 200lbs of fertilizer. Probably not the best best tool for spreading but my spreader couldn't do it.
Then I used the tiller to really get the soil ready for seeding. It worked out great and the removal of the rocks meant a whole lot less beating up the tiller.

Love my land pride RTR1258 tiller that I purchased last March new for $2370. I have my R1's set at the widest track and the tiller covers my tracks. Breaks new ground like a charm and is ready for planting in 3 passes, and I have heavy clay soil here. I vote for tiller too.

In my opinion, the best bang for the buck is a King Kutter tiller.
TSC and Tarter Gate....not so much!

I have a LP RT tiller and it is awesome. Sure beats a hoe (only referring to gardening) or the little walk behind tiller I use in the small garden. I’ve used it to break soil as well as deeper for planting. I’ve only had it one season so still honeymooning. I’d recommend at least as wide as your machine to cover the tracks.

+1, have a KK Tiller FM and RCM. The only thing I found, I have a 60" KK Tiller for my B2410, are tree roots suck. I damn near got knocked off the tractor hitting a thick root with the tiller that launch the tractor. Tree roots suck.

From what you are describing, I would lean towards the tiller. I purchased a Maschio H205C several Years ago and I absolutely love it. As has been stated, I will use a Disc to break up land that has not been cultivated in a long time (if possible), but after that I use the tiller. If i have to break up some hard soil I will make a first pass to break the top then come back deeper. Love the Tiller!

The first tiller I ever used was behind an old Bolin's 14G garden tractor 42 inches wide and I wore out 2 set of tines and to be honest I should have never goten rid of it was a super set up,, So yea tiller all the way

The last three pictures were a food plot that started with 4ft of vegetation on it that did not get mowed. I hit it with the disk then the tiller.

Started in the morning with the disk.

Finished with the tiller.

Very nice. I like the weights on your disc harrow. Do you find they are positioned right (front-back)?

I have the EA disc harrow and it’s too light at 533 lbs.

The placement is great. I went a little heavy. If I did it again, I would use a 2x4 form instead of a 2x6.

I purchased a Braber tiller last spring for my BX23D.
Pretty impressed by how well it worked.
