PTO Shaft grease or not to grease?

I was wondering if many grease the PTO shaft when not in use? I have watched several videos, some do not because it attracts dirt, some do to protect the shaft, others use a WD40 style product.

I didn't know what the collective body did here. My dad on his tractors will grease the shaft before installing on implement, but otherwise does mess with it.

Just curious what others do.

I always put the rubber cap on when an implement is not connected.

When I go to connect an implement, I will add a little grease if it needs it.

+1 on grease and cap. I put grease on the cap actually.

Just for what it's worth, I have found Fluid Film is good in cases where you don't want dirt.

Gotten so I use it on my lift arm balls, snowblower chute, etc.

Otherwise, I'm with the other guys; grease and cap.

I was hoping for some clarification. What is the cap you are referring to? And I was reading this as to grease the telescoping part of the shaft. I have seen them left dry and others grease them.

I think everyone was assuming the question is what to do with an unused PTO shaft on the tractor to prevent bad things happening to it like corrosion and dirt. The cap is a cover that usually came with the tractor when it was new.

Didn't get a cover with my B since I bought it used. I keep it wiped down and spray it with a lube to keep the rust off. It's parked indoors so not that big of an issue.

For the PTO shaft, I did lube it down when I had issues getting it to extend earlier this year. I used the same spray lube I use on the shaft of the B as well as the quick connect on the end of the PTO shaft.

You are correct. I removed my mower and was deciding what I needed to do with the exposed PTO shaft. I have my cap in the SUV, will get it put on there and the shaft greased next trip to the farm.
