PTO Power Rakes

I have been looking at picking up a 60" power rake and was wondering if anyone here has feedback on brands.

I am amazed at the cost (looking at how they are built). I would figure they would cost about as much as a tiller, they are more like 3-4 times that. I don't see any reason why.

I've been thinking of modify my tiller or fabbing up a power rake after seeing the prices of new and used power rakes. Watching this thread...

A tool that may do what you're wanting done is a soil pulverizer. I found a Gill brand with a double roller for a few hunderd dollars a few years ago. The spikes in the front of the beam loosen the soil, the beam levels, the spiked rollers break up any clods. Perfect for preparation for planting.

I believe the pulverizer is the manual/pre version of the power rake.

There are times when the fastest way to rejuvenate a lawn is to do a couple passes with the power rake, vs tilling and then raking. A lot of times I don't want to pull up the rocks. Same goes for the boxblade on a nice gravel driveway, a power rake is a great tool.

I just can't believe the prices looking at what they are made up of.

Mikester - I am seriously considering making this a winter project with one of my sons.

I believe the drum is reverse rotation, so probably a flail mower for the base mechanics. I'll start watching craigs.

I picked up some 8" schedule 40 pipe and was planning to replace the auger on my rototiller, make an SSQA, and drive it using a hydraulic motor. Operates bi-directionally.
