PTO Overrun clutch?

I have an old, old hay tedder / rake. It works great, but as far as I can tell there is no slip clutch or shear pin. So I'm thinking about getting one of these PTO overrun clutches. I know I'll have to shorten the PTO shaft if I get this. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with these devices? This one says it's good up to 60 hp which ought to be fine for my L3901.

Over running clutches and slip clutches are different devices intended for different purposes.

You certainly do not need an ORC and probably do not need a slip clutch.

I would agree that a tedder rake is less likely to come to a sudden, dead stop than other implements. But let's say it did...

Your tractor is already equipped internally with over running capabilities, either in a over run clutch or a hydraulic clutch pack that doesn't care about the implement overrunning.

I think your mis understanding what an overrunning clutch does.
It doesn't protect the Implement or the tractor, it just keeps and implement from pushing / driving the tractor and that's it.

You simply don't need it, for this or any other implement.

Now if the tedder rake is not equipped with a shear pin on the PTO drive then that would be a good thing to add, via a new upgraded PTO shaft.

Ok, so I see I can buy a whole new shaft with a slip clutch or a shear pin. But it would be nice if I could just buy a short adapter with a shear pin. and I can't seem to find that. Maybe my search terms are wrong, or such an adapter doesn't exist?

You can get slip clutches to fit various shaft sizes at Tractor Supply, Agristore, Amazon, etc. One would fit between the gearbox and your shaft, shortened. Are you sure the bolt holding the yoke to the gearbox doesn't serve as a shear pin?

Such an adapter does not exist, and you wouldn't want it if it did, as PTO adapters are are hard on the Tractor.

You can get a different yoke with a shear pin for the PTO shaft you have, but the yoke will cost you as much as a new shaft in most cases.

If you want a slip clutch make sure there is room on the Implement end of the shaft for the clutch, they take up alot of room.
