I have only had a tractor for a year or so….I am new to this and clearly a slow learner …

When hooking up a PTO shaft I found using a bungee/tarp cord to support the weight of the PTO shaft makes it much easier.

This allows you to concentrate on finding new and creative vocabulary words when cuss’n at the spline for not lining up. 😏

Clearly obvious now…not sure I have seen or read anyone suggesting this bungee ‘trick’ for the hookup…only seen them used for keeping the shaft out the mud

hope it helps any fellow slow learners out there

I hook up the 3 point and lift the implement so it is off the ground allowing me to rotate the PTO shaft. Some member's use a PTO wrench to rotate the shaft. Here is a discussion on this.

Many implements have PTO shaft holders (large plastic hook that folds down) to keep the PTO shaft out of the dirt. They make the hook up process easier by also supporting most of the PTO shaft weight during connection. Both of my Land Pride mowers (rotary and finish) have the holders.

Land Pride calls it a - DRIVELINE STORAGE HOOK
Keeps the driveline off the ground when not in use.

I do use the 'hook' for storage... I found the bungee does a far better job centering the shaft for connection...and the added give in the bungee makes alignment easier IMO.

I have constantly had issues connecting the PTO shaft on my brush hog and finish mower, (especially turning the ripe old age of 80) here's what I did to make things much easier:

1. Changed the yokes on the end of the brush hog and finish mower to the push button type
2. Cleaned and lubed the shafts
3. And the best advice....back up to your equipment to get the arms in position (ready to lift).....the lower your arms fully, and pull forward approx 10" or whatever your PTO shaft will allow......now you have more room to work.
4. Get a general feel as to the tooth/spline position on the PTO shaft of the implement, and then turn the spline on the tractor to get close to that same position.
5. Lift the PTO to the tractor and rotate the tractor spline to match.......push/lock it on.
6. Back the tractor up and attach the 3 pt system.

And yes the bungee cord will also help if needed........as I used it before I started using the steps above.

Best of Luck!
