I recently put a Pat's Easy Hitch setup and hydraulic top link on my B3200. This works great for my non-PTO implements, but with spring around the corner, I need to get my tiller ready. Being a first time tractor owner, I'm unsure if using a PTO extension is okay to use with this Pat's system or if it would be best to buy new PTO shafts and shields? I would need to buy new shafts for the tiller and a rotary cutter, so obviously, if there are no real concerns with the PTO extension, I'd rather go that route due to cost. Suggestions?

Another novice question, are all PTO shafts the same spline or do I need to shop for a particular size?

there were some way back that were "different" - but most if not all tractors are type I = 1-3/8 x 6 Male Spline

Much larger machines do have a different set of specs.

Have you hooked up your tiller and measured the overlap? You may not need anything if you have enough slip in the shaft.

Hook up implement. With shaft connected to tiller, remove it at the slip. Hook other side to tractor and compare where they meet. That's your overlap.

I have not hooked either up yet. How much overlap is recommended?

You should install the implement and driveline and lift the implement to the straight out position (maximum driveline extension). Then see how much driveline overlap you have. On my old tractor with Pat’s system my implement driveline were still plenty long.

I'd measure the distance needed and then measure your PTO shaft with it collapsed. Then compute the overlap. Look up the overlap needed online. Think you'll find it is still fine.

Measure from the "click", e.g. depression, points on each shaft. On the PTO shaft, measure from release button/collar to the other one, fully collapsed.

The owner's manual for the implement should have the specs for the PTO shaft. A HP implement will need more 'overlap' of the shafts and the shafts designs matters too...

haven't looked but maybe Pat sells or 'links' to a PTO extension ? if he doesn't ,maybe he should ,since PTO shafts tend to be implement specific...

Be aware that adding shaft extensions can introduce a wobble that can cause problems down the line. You can buy new PTO shaft tubes relatively cheaply from your local dealer and cut them to fit your setup.

along the lines of what @mikester said, I read in a dusty corner of the internet of the (possibly unlikely) chance of inducing unbalanced loads on the PTO drive. I opted to locate a local "driveshaft shop" and they swapped out the shaft stock for me, it was very cheap, something like $25-$30 per set. They remove roll pins, keep your joints and slip clutches, and install new shaft pieces. They lengthened 5 shafts for me and turned them around in a few days. It saved me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, and no extra devices needed in the drive line. If you need a new PTO shield afterwards, they make universal ones that work well.

You need to measure the overlap first and see what you are working with.
