I purchased a 2017 3901L Tractor. The PTO on the rear of the tractor looked brand new like it had never been used. The problem I’m having is when I engage the clutch. It has no effect on the PTO whatsoever I’ve heard that the PTO clutch can rust together if it’s not used is there anyway that I can check that myself or is this something I need to take in and have a professional look at? The clutch is otherwise working fine for the Tractor.

You have an L3901. The PTO is engaged with a lever operated cable mounted on the right fender. What clutch are you engaging? Have you tried readimg the operator's manual?

The pto lever is on the transmission tunnel . I have read the manual. It’s a manual transmission tractor . From what I read and spoken with to others the clutch is supposed to disengage the pto shaft when engaging the pto lever. Is this not correct

I didn't see if the machine was described as a Manual or HST. If an HST, Dan is correct on the PTO lever. But, the Manuals have it down by the operator's feet. It's always important to give model number and whether the machine is Manual or HST.

Nobody here knows a new member's experience level. Sometimes the questions may seem abrasive, but help other members judge how to answer the inquiry.

Dan, for example, has forgotten more about mechanics and hydraulics than most of us will ever know.

Good questions will get better answers. It's not personal.

Maybe you can explain a bit more about what is and isnt happening.

You have to disengage the clutch when engaging the PTO on the L3901 HST as well. How can you operate a manual gear drive tractor if the clutch won't disengage?

Are you saying your PTO will not turn, or when it's turning, depressing the clutch does not stop it from turning?

The L3901 has a dual-stage clutch, so depressing the clutch pedal part of the way will stop the ground drive but allow the PTO to continue to run. When the pedal is fully depressed, it will also stop the PTO from turning.

OP has a manual transmission; TOH has HST.
The HST has a single clutch and PTO lever on the right fender. The manual has a two-stage clutch and PTO lever on the floor.

I suspect OP isn't fully depressing the clutch to the second position to release the PTO clutch. If it's anything like our old MF50, it takes a lot of effort. Then while standing on the clutch, you had to reach down on the left side of the transmission to shift the lever. Then release the clutch slowly, part-way to start the PTO. Select a gear and release the rest of the way.

There's an Operator Manual for the L33/3901 available to download at KubotaBooks.

You don’t need to apologize for Dan and try to make the new member feel poorly for coming here.
Dan has forgotten how to be respectful of others and polite, especially to newcomers.

There was nothing "impolite" in my response. I asked two questions both pertinent to understandung his problem. Cold maybe but not impolite.

Thank you for weighing in Miss Manners.

This is closest to what’s happening. Push the clutch all the way down and pull the pto lever up but it just grinds. Thank you

Also the clutch works fine for the transmission during all other operations. I’m pretty mechanically inclined just never worked on equipment such as this tractor.

I have not adjusted the pedal yet but the pto lever works as advertised when. Tractor is off . Am I to understand the clutch depresses further for the pto than regular transmission shifting? I’m hoping this isn’t a stupid question!

Not a stupid question. The clutch on the DT is two separate clutches in one.

One clutch plate controls power to the drive wheels and it disengages high in the pedal travel

The second clutch plate controls power to the PTO shaft and it disengage when the pedal is depressed past the point of drive wheel disengagement. Thos allows you to stop ground travel while keeping the PTO running. In tractor parlance thats called "live PTO and is useful when usung implements like hay bslers or rotary mowers.

The PTO engagement lever operates a dog clutch placed after the foot clutch. The dog clutch disconnects the trabsmission PTO output shaft and allows you to operate the tractor without the rearcPTO shaft turning. It also acts as an over running coupler to prevent inertial backfeed from heavy bladed rotary mowers. The foot clutch has to be disengaged to engage/disengage that dog clutch.

The behavior you are seeing can be caused by improper adjustment of the two stage clutch. That adjustment is covered in thecWSM.
