Received info for summer fill and winter contract prices today.

Summer fill $1.49 gallon for a one time only fill up.

Contract option #1: Pay for all up front....$1.75.

Contract option #2" pay $0.25 gallon to lock in, but cost $1.85 gallon.

I got prices of $1.94, $1.90, & a special @ $1.71 but they add on $20 for safety training etc...
I own my own 1000 gal tank.

We’ve been $3+ for a while but don’t use much.

Yeah, we only have a 100 pound tank for range top.

Got hooked for $100 rental fee this year since we don’t use enough propane.

Not bad when your heat bill is reduced by 30%. But then last year was rediculous.

Did my summer pre-buy 3 weeks ago. $1,619/ gl, 600gl. That gets us through the year.

We don’t have a good place to put a large propane tank.

We replaced our oil boiler in 2008 for $3,800.

Still, I often regret not looking more into a propane boiler back then.

Would have been a big Energy Star credit at the time. But for a couple, most oil boilers didn’t qualify for the tax credit back then.

Credit would have likely paid for the increased cost.

Would have gotten the 275 gallon fuel oil tank out of my wet cellar.

We’ve rectified 90% of the water issues over 32 years, but the chances are always there for something catastrophic.

But.....you are likely near an oil/gas well source in PA.

Fwiw, we have competition in my area. We didn’t realize how easy it is to change companies/tanks when we moved here. You can easily pay double in this area if you don’t shop around.

That is why all propane companies work hard to get folks to rent a tank, not purchase. They like to tell you of all the benefits of renting..... they're responsible for all fittings, leaks, maintenance, loss of propane in case of parts failure.

When I asked them how often do components fail causing a full tank leak the answer was almost never. So all the benefits are basically a one time cost to get a tank in compliance.

They are just trying to lock in a customer so they can't "shop" their price.

My point is that switching is very easy. Call up the new provider. They bring an empty tank, move the old one out of the way, setup the new one, and transfer the propane to the new tank. Next time they are in the area, they fill it up.

Afterwards, you just call the old provider to pickup their tank. It will take a few days to get the old tank hauled away. In my area, the companies wave the lease fee if you ask. So, you aren’t really locked in at all.

The last time I had a fill up. The driver said your tank is very old.
I'll put in a order to switch it out. So after a couple Months in pull a service truck and new tank. The guy said the tank is 4' to close to your electric service. Well need to move it to the left. I said what ever. My home was built in 1998. So there's been no issues with the tank since then. So they move it over almost infront of my water hose hook up. Like inches from it. Hook it up.
A week later I get a bill for $120. For moving the tank I didn't want moved.

In my area one company will not transfer any propane from a competitor's tank to theirs. When someone is finished with one company they can have another tank set on the same location, with whatever propane is left in the older tank and get credit from that co.

The only way to a avoid rent is to own the tank, no matter what company one is dealing with, at least around here.
