Problem starting L2900

Hi all,

I'm having issues starting my L2900 GST even though it's got a brand new battery.

When I turn the key, there is a click and the display lights come on, but no starter action. Of course it's in neutral with brake on and out of gear.

If I push in the clutch a few times, shift back and forth between forward and reverse and keep turning the key, it will eventually start and run perfectly. But if I turn it off, I have the same problem again, whether the tractor is hot or cold.

Is there some kind of sender that could be going bad?

Sounds like you have an issue with the OPC module.

It's the module that all the safety inputs go to and then passes on the starter signal.

Mine does the same thing. I've traced it back to one of the neutral safety switches for the shuttle shifter. I have to wiggle it when starting. At some point I plan to bypass it.....

A bad ground connection can also cause starting problems.

Since pushing the clutch several times and going between gears seems to "fix" the problem I'd start with those switches.

Would replacing an OPC module be a DIY job or will I need to get a Kubota tech out here?

I'll pull the tractor out and see if I can trace back to the problem switches. Is an OPC module a DIY fix or will I need to get a Kubota tech to do that?

Intermittent electrical issues are normally switch related. The contacts get tarnished and lose their ability to conduct. If it's related to the module, it's most likely a plug that is loose or has a bad connection. If I had an electrical diagram of the L2900, I could help you out better, but unfortunately I do not.

See attached photo of OPC. A plug in type connection easily done.

However, before deciding the OPC is faulty you need to rule out all the safety switches that feed it info.

I have attached some OPC info but for a different model tractor. This will give you a better understanding of the OPC system on any tractor.

It could also be an issue with battery cables, clean the clamps on the post and also the ends where they bolt to the frame and the solenoid. As to the clutch and gear shift, hold the key in the start position and move one at the time and see if it starts. Could be you have a safety switch that is slightly out of adjust or loose or bad.

A little trick I've learned more than once. Hold the key all the way to the right as you would to crank the tractor over. If it doesn't start keep holding the key there and wiggle each safety switch at a time. Such as hold the key to start and wiggle PTO engage lever etc. Etc.
