power steering for B6100

I have the opportunity to get a complete power steering unit from an Arens GT20 Garden tractor. It is fully hydraulic with an orbit valve on the end of the steering shaft. Is this heavy enough for a B6100 with a front end loader. i have a feeling that I may have to rig up a belt driven power steering pump as the main pump is already used for the loader and 3 point. Free is a pretty good price if it works.

It should run it power wise.
And you can use the hydraulic circuit already on the unit if it's an open center Hydrostatic unit.

I was thinking of hooking it up to the main pump but not sure how to plumb it I have built the block to route the hyd through the loader control valve and then to the three point. The loader control valve is in series with the 3pt. Could I just hook to the power beyond port. I know just enough about hydraulics to be dangerous

I'm sure there will be a number of ideas put forth on this one. Personally, I have my doubts about the size of the cylinder from a lawn tractor operating your machine with a loader. That's just one point. Then getting into the hydraulic system is another concern. No matter where you tie in, you have a few problems to deal with. Most orbitrol style steering valves are capable of maybe three or four hundred PSI of back pressure. Many systems use return flow from the steering as charge pressure for hydrostat transmissions and they work fine in that pressure range. In this case you're asking it to withstand 2000 PSI or more. I think that will create problems holding the shaft seals at some point. Maybe some other issues as well. The valve will have a relief valve no doubt, but using the steering and loader (or even the three point) could easily raise the system pressure beyond that value (whatever it is) so bottoming out the steering cylinder under those conditions will effectively raise the steering relief to the system pressure. I'm not sure that's a good plan.

You can use the power beyond
on the loader valve.

But PS is typically powered via a priority circuit. If you use the implement circuit you are going to experience interference problems whenever the loader is operated.

If you add a flow divider ahead of the loader you will avoid anh interference but the loader will be slowed way down.

The better solution is to add a PS pump.

The factory loader on a B6100 has its relief valve set right about 800 psi ( I've adapted one onto a B5100). This may well be more than the PS valve can handle.

800 PSI - REALLY?

How about 1800 PSI?

PS valves typically have their own relief but its a point worth considering.

Yup... the B219 will lift about 500 lbs; w/ the 2" cylinders @800 psi there's plenty of lift force. When I put the B219 on our B5100, I added a pump on the front of the tractor, and added a gauge next to the loader valve so I could figure out what was happening.

Can you send out a picture of the pump installation? Thank you in advance!

Here's a link to our album of B5100 pictures, taken over the last 10 years.

There are pictures of the pump drive, including the shrink disc I used to grab hold of the oddball spline on the front of the crankshaft.

Where did you get the "Shrink Disc"? I was looking at the pulley for the fan belt and it doesn't look like I can drill holes in it to mount the flange. Thoughts?

I love the idea of a shrink disc. I've been looking at the pictures. Is there a thread on how it was built?

H
Its a taper fit clamping ring. It fits over a thin walled hub and when you tighten the bolts it pulls the two flanges together squeezing the ID in against the wall of the hub and clamping it to the shaft. Similar in concept to a taper lock pully.

I've been studying up on the Fenner Drive and that really sounds intreging. I'm going to look into this more.. I'm collecting parts right now but I use the tractor so much, that I'm afraid that there will be snow on the ground before I actually install all this
