Post hole digger

Hi everyone. I recently bought a b2301 and I need to know if I can use a standard auger or do I need one of the smaller ones.
My dealer said that any size will work on the b series but before I buy one I just wanted to ask you guys.
I know the bx uses the smaller one but I'm hoping a standard size will work.

What is a "standard size"? Do you mean the attach point size or the diameter of the hole size?

just a one time use, but nice to have ?

It may be cheaper to RENT a standalone PHD machine, even have someone bore the holes for you.
In my case, it was cheaper and faster to have a pro come bore the 16 holes, instead of me driving 3 miles to get the free-to-use PHD, and then figure out how to use it.

The B will use a regular PHD... if you have Indust./R4 tires it might drag the ground a little (ag/R1 tires have more height to them).

For what it's worth. My PHD is the least used implement that I have... Such a pain in the butt to hook up, that unless I'm doing a dozen holes or more, I'll dig them by hand and will be faster at the total time (than hooking and unloading the PHD).

Everyone has a reason for why they want/need a tool so I agree, you gotta weigh the pros and cons, like convenience/time/money, or whatever, However;

The last time I rented a gas powered PHD it beat the sh1t out of me and my buddy (who is 20 years younger and in great shape).

Then we proceeded to get it stuck about 7/8 of the way to it's max depth, and it took us 3 hours to unstick that mother%**king thing.

We had 16 holes to dig and we got 1 and 7/8ths of one done before he called a guy to come do it. (this was pre-tractor for me).

Never will I do that again. I'll take the time to hook it up and I agree, they are a PITA to hook up.

That being said.....I now have one that mostly sits there looking pretty but it's ready to go if I need it.

A pull behind post hole digger works pretty well. It's a bit of pain to get from the rental area.

As far as the tractor goes, I think it depends on how much lift you have with the lift arms whether the standard size will work. Maybe someone here has a B2301 or B2601 and uses one.

What model numbers are you comparing?

I had a “County Line” (Tractor Supply brand) on my B2301. Just fit; if my memory serves lifted up there was a few inches of ground clearance. My soil is so rocky that I found it pretty much useless and sold it. I thought the TSC one seemed pretty well made, at least at that time. If I had different soil I’d buy it again.

Never had an issue with my PHD on my B2910. Easy for me. What is the issue?

I store mine hanging from a chain. Perhaps that is the difference?

edit: I have 14" & 9" augers for mine. Glad I have both.

The PHD is generally laying on the ground and heavy enough that they can be difficult to get attached. Using a stand or hanging them eliminates that problem.

some people just drill a hole and then leave the auger to hold up the PHD

I don’t use mine that often 3 or 4 times a year. It’s great for planting trees too. It’s well worth having one here, and by hanging it off the side of my wood shed, I can back up to it, and hook up quickly. Same for unloading. Hang it with the auger touching the ground. I leave the pins in it, and put a strap on the driveshaft to keep it up off the ground.

This was my solution also. My PHD is ancient - and very heavy. So I built a tall frame and the PHD hangs on two chains from that frame. The chains are attached to all-thread with cranks welded to them so I can adjust the 3 point hitch attachment points up and down; with the swing allowed by the chains and the up and down front and rear adjustments now I can mount the PHD to the 3 point hitch without too much cussing.

I have a PD25 with 9" & 24" augers. I picked up the Landpride stand and fastened it to a pallet for easier hook up and storage.
