I have been on a planting rampage this spring. One of the projects was to plant Butterfly Bushes in the back yard (the dog's fenced in part, away from the deer). Without the PHD digging in this soil would be a royal pia.
Post Hole Digger makes life better :)

reminds me of my soil when I lived in New England. Sand and mostly rocks. Built some nice walls out of those rocks
Could not agree more. I planted 22 trees last weekend and got it all done in one afternoon using the post hole digger on my tractor. I would have either died digging the holes by hand or been such a wreck afterwards I would have been down for a week just to recover. I love my post hole digger.
I've been considering one mostly for planting small trees. Any that you recommend or ones to avoid? If I do get one it won't get that much use so I was thinking of one from someplace like TSC, but if they don't work that well I'll go with a brand name.
Oliver on my previous tractor I picked up a beat up, no name PHD I found on Craigslist for about $300. I used it primarily to drill 100 holes in our rocky, sloped woods for a dog fence. I pretty much went through 100 shear bolts with hitting every rock on our property. Then I sold it for what I originally paid for it.
That said, it did the job
My son has a B3030 in MD. I plan on offering this one to him (a Landpride PD-15 I found on Craigslist in really great shape). If he doesn't want it I expect to have no problem selling it.
Thanks ctfjr. My land is very rocky so if I end up with one i'll stock up on shear bolts!

Same here... bought a County-Line (Speeco) from TSC and a 12” auger....planted 10 guava plants, two plum trees, a lemon tree.... several posts for a boat shed... YEP... PHD is the ACE-Koom-Boom! (I also had fun Building a rolling-storage-rack which also is very helpful mounting/dis-mounting it alone.)

)I saw "Rode for more than 50 years" and thought wow that's a long time. Then I started counting back myself, from 67 to 16, so I guess I have as well LOL. I've ridden in all of the lower 48 as well as Canada but didn't ride all that much in the last 2 years. But my projects are completed so I'm getting out more this year and thankfully the weather so far has been wonderful.
I have the Land Pride SA-20 hydraulic post hole digger with a 12 inch auger. Its does a fantastic job.
I have a 14" auger for my PHD which works well for planting things...
Believe it or not, it also works REALLY well for planting 6x6 pressure treated posts! LOL!
Henro I sure could have used a larger auger on my phd for the Boxwoods I just planted. They had 12-14" burlap balls and I ended up drilling twice with my 12"

BUT I did find a root once, and screwed the auger all the way in, in a blink of the eye! Had to turn it back out by hand somehow, do not remember exactly what I used to do it. The procedure took some effort, but was not too bad.
It is actually amazing how fast the auger goes in the ground when it catches a root! Almost worth trying just to see...LOL
lmao! I had plenty of experience when I put in the the 4X4's for a dog fence in the woods. Note to self: Where there are trees, there are roots.
I found a 3' pipe wrench worked. Sometimes I had to rock the tractor back n forth 1st. Not a lot of fun
