You might be able to, but 2 factors:
Most ring gears are one way, teeth are only cut on one side for engagement.
you would have to heat the ring gear up without heating the flywheel, not an easy task.

You can't buy the ring gear separately, you have to buy the set.
P/N E7179-70000 ~$450.00

I would Highly recommend getting a new starter too! ;)

Is the whole thing torn up? I helped my brother do one on a Farmall H back in the early 80s .we didn't flip it. We heated it rotated it and put it back on. It was only worn in that one spot because the engine always stopped in roughly the same spot. It mainly just runs augers these days but it's still in service.

I want to thank you for your advise. What I did was flipped the flywheel ring and it made things worse. The idea of the teeth being cut in one direction never came to mind. I did buy an after market starter, because looking at the teeth on this existing starter are just as thrashed as the flywheel. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes this new starter corrects the gear screeching grinding bite my tongue ear pearsing gaudaweful sound go away. If not, I'll be flipping the flywheel ring back over and give her another try.
