Range safety and the ability to safely carry a weapon in public are two entirely different things. IMHO the CC classes should cover it, since the first thing most newly licensed folks do is start carrying in public. Dangerous combo: Person who is new to guns AND new to concealed carry. About 3/4 of the people in the CC course we took had never handled a weapon, and it showed.

My favorite carry setup is a 9mm DAO Sig P320 compact slide on a subcompact grip module that holds 12+1 rounds in a custom IWB kydex Ozarks Holster. My other smaller, carry gun is a 9mm Sig P938 that holds 6 or 7+1, cocked and locked, in a N82 IWB holster.

Training is essential. My range contracts with a local police and civilian training company, Fortis Group, to offer a series of CPL and post-CPL classes. I take a class about every 6 months and am waiting for the next level IV - low light class. I recently took a full-day long-range shooting class with targets out to 700 yards. I'm hooked and just bought a bolt action rifle.

I pulled my 270 out last night. After I bought it, I put a nice scope on it. Went to the range to site it in and after 3 shots it jammed. It's a semi auto. Put it back in the case and it's sat there since. Later found out that the previous owners idea of cleaning was spraying it with wd40

So between last night and tonight, I cleaned it really good, and got the slide moving freely. Consulted a gun smith on my way home. Had them look at it, and showed me how to clean the action in it :) Also pointed out that the parts aren't replaceable for the semi automatic. Once it's done, it's done :(

But, Remington can convert it to pump action :) Just gotta send it to them.

I want to get it sited in for at least 200 yards :D And start working my way out from there.

Funny. Had my permit for years yet I've never carried; not even in my truck except to/from the range a couple of times. I grew up shooting actively from my teens well into my forties. After that my interest began to taper off. When I do go I enjoy it and I've even assisted as a line coach when our club puts out a call for them before a class. Part of the problem I see is the desire for CCW intructors to make a quick buck and permitting folks to take a course that have never seen a gun. Even mature senior citizens will show up with a gun and ammo never removed from the sack since checkout. Sometimes its a gun they purchase onsite just before the CCW class from the instructor! And every class I assisted at had a "moment" of some kind. They truly needed line coaches because noone can see/hear everything at once and then move to intercede fast enough. My last "moment" was when an attendee had a hot rimfire case drop behind his shooting glasses. He spun back bringing the muzzle behind the line of fire with him. I stepped forward, grabbed the gun while stating "I've got it." . He reluctantly let go while I held the muzzle forward; cleared the brass which had burned his face just under his eye. I've seen similar instances from cases from shooters next to one another. Are they overcrowding?...You bet.

Wife and I are signed up for the next conceal carry class in a few weeks :D Had a big talk with the instructor to get a feel for how he does the class. He emphasized safety, which I'm all for :D

I also know the range that they do the qualifying at. The range is run by the sheriff department and has a really big emphasis on safety there as well. Been there a couple times over the years. They have two line coaches on each range (rifle and pistol). Plus the instructor for the course. So that leaves three people supervising the class :D

Will post back after the class on our experiences :D

Just got some goodies off Amazon,

one was the rubber finger grips for my newly acquired Ruger 1911. Took me longer to find the torx wrench than to place grips on! Really makes it feel good in the hand. Look forward to shooting it! Grip was less than 10 bucks too!;)

While the classes and instructors have faults, they really are a good thing.

Honestly, I've only shot at a range in my high school (indoor at that), and during my hunter safety course at 14 or so.

Can you imagine a LOADED .22 Winchester range gun in a high school today?!?! Certainly wouldn't happen on the watch of our Governor Lord Vader here in NYS!!:eek:

Where I come from, hunter and gun safety was taught/learned from your father, grandfather, or whoever else had that role. The "range" was out behind the house somewhere safe.

I was from a small town that was part of a larger district. Went to school with farm boys just like me until 6th grade. After that, went to the "big school."

As a high school kid, I did some small game hunting with a few buds from the bigger town. One kid passed his shotgun to another over a fence, loaded. Other kid takes it by the trigger, and BANG, she goes off!!!:eek:

Thankfully, no one hurt, but last time I hunted with that group!! ;)

There was one guy I got into varmint (woodchuck) hunting. In this case, I was the instructor/teacher, but it worked.

He adored my Model 700 Varmint Special in .22-250. He bought a 700 BDL in 6mm, and we shot a lot of 'em. He respected the gun and it's ability. We both still have those guns, MANY years later!:D

When i was a kid,i carried the .22 rifle in a case on the transit bus to the shooting gallery in the basement of the civic center.
Guessing around 1977.
Bet i would get shot if i tried that now....
Those of you south of the border are fortunate to be able to enjoy your firearms as intended, not so easy up here anymore. I had a hard time finding .177 pellets in the nearby city we go shopping in occasionally. Can find them in two places here in town.

When I was in high school, and was driving myself, I had a gun in the truck in the school parking lot more often than not. Fall-late winter was small or large game hunting season, and early spring started varmints.

Didn't hide the guns - in a rack in the back window......

Couldn't do it today....not sure what requirements are in Canada, but sound more restrictive.....

Sad....

Used to do the same, but they couldn't be visible. Used to wrap it in a soft case and store behind the seat :D

I remember lots of trucks with gun racks in the cab. I remember one truck a few years back with a hole in floor and a chunk knocked out of bellhousing. Think the gun racs were safer.

That sounds like a fool riding around with a loaded and cocked rifle. Which is a huge no no in the states. Had a buddy a few years ago that got popped by a game wardens decoy. Didn't fire from where he was at, which was too close to the road. Just climbed out and scoped it.

Game warden pulled around and checked the guns in the vehicle. He had one shell that got stuck in the rifle. So the rifle was technically loaded, even though it wasn't in the chamber. Game warden handed him a fine and stored the rifle for a year.

Picked up a Sig SP2022 in .40 S&W for me :D I really like how it shoots.

Went to the gun range this afternoon to try it out.

Here's the second clip. Was a little low on three of them, the other 10 were within a 3" grouping :D

I think you got a line of LGS BS (Local Gun Shop BS), see 742 parts list here as an example http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/Rifles-37895/742-39567.htm?page=4 and I doubt you could wear it out if you shot a couple of boxes through it every day for the next 100 years.

That said the Remington 74x series (that would be the 740,742, 7400 et al) could be a little finicky with certain ammo. If I remember correctly they really did not like the plain cheap Federal SP ammo. I had an early 7400 30-06 and it would jam about every 3rd round with Federal ammo, leaving an empty cartridge case stuck in the chamber, could clear it using a cleaning rod to tap the case out (or the truck radio antenna in a jamb). It would shoot Winchester and Remington ammo all day long and never jam. It had something to do with the burn rate of the powder used by Federal as I recall so maybe they fixed it but try it with a couple of different ammo brands and stay in the mid-range of bullet weights before you give up on it.

WD-40 might have gunked it up, they are not particularly hard to completely disassemble but you might try some Gun Scrubber or Brake Cleaner if you think there is still some WD-40 residue in the action or chamber. Be careful with the stock spraying any of that kind of stuff some might eat the plastic finish.

Funny you mentioned the federal ammo. I think my step dad mentioned that the 270 liked the federal ammo and didn't like the others. Wondering if he got confused. I had 2 boxes of federal ammo and a box of Winchester, that he gave me when I bought it from him.

Cleaned it up really good, Got everything running smooth on it. Took it to the gun range yesterday and it jammed on the 3rd round with the federal ammo. I'll dig through the closet and see if I still have the box of Winchester ammo and give it a try :D If not, I'll pick some up.

Spent the rest of the time sighting in my 30-30. Lent it to my step dad for a couple years to use during deer season. He had the scope all jacked up. At 25 yards it was shooting 4" to the left. At least he didn't mess with the up and down on it. Still took a box of shells to get it dialed in. Ran the target out to 100 yards and it was spot on :D

Who knows, I doubled checked what I was using at the range. I was shooting Remington shells through it the other day when it jammed. Maybe pops was right about it liking federal rounds. I got a couple boxes of Winchester rounds in the closet. I'll pick up a box of federal's, and run over to my father in laws this weekend and see what it likes and go from there. If it keeps jamming, I'll probably send it in and have it converted to a pump action and be done with it.

What kind of jam i.e. leaving the empty case in the chamber, double feed, not feeding at all etc. The ammo issue I teferred too was leaving the empty case stuck in the chamber.

Misfeeds can be related to a bad magazine.

I sould be stunned if Remington converted it to a pump...

Good luck

Costs around 300 plus shipping for the conversion. Guy at the gun shop said it was quite common when he worked at gander mountain for the models you listed earlier.

I went back and looked at the ammo again. Had a few not in the box I was trying to burn up before switching to a new box. Not sure of the brand on those. They didn't match the Remington shells, or Winchester shells
.

To answer your question. It's leaving the empty round in the chamber and trying to load another shell on top of it. Happens when loading the third shell each time. After that, it's pretty much each time.

I downloaded the manual for it onto my tablet so I had reference to the break down of the gun. Pulled the wood under the barrel to get to the spring and slides. And removed the trigger assembly. Didn't take the action out though. That's a major undertaking. Think I found the issue though. I don't think the trigger assembly has ever been removed and cleaned around it. Has some slight surface rust along the back portion where the slides travel. Plus quite a bit of carbon build up. Cleaned the living snot out of it. Oiled it up in there, then worked the action back and forth. Had to repeat the process several times till it was clean.

Reassembled it, and tested function. Seems to be working much smoother now. Before, I was feeling a slight catch in it when pulling the action back.

Guess I'll find out this weekend how well it works

I have a 742 in 30-06 that I inherited from my late FIL and it caused me a bunch of grief years ago. It's the rails that wear out so that is why they convert them to pumps. I am not interested in hunting with a pump because they are noisy and I do not hunt with a hot one in a chamber. Even deer know that the racking sound of a pump gun means run!

I had a head space issue on mine so I changed the barrel and found a reload that cycles through nicely. Soon as I spent all that time and money I put it in the safe and bought a bolt action for hunting and haven't shot it since.

Might have to drag it out for $#|+$ and giggles.

I emailed Remington for information on the pump conversion. And to see if they still did it or not. After reading about the issues with the action, I feel that it's probably the safest bet for the rifle. Apparently the action eats itself on the back end of the stroke
