Pin next to fan pulley screw?

Hi there I am rebuilding a Beta Marine 28 which is a marine version of the Kubota BD1005
There is a pin sticking up right next to the fly wheel screw
It isnt in the manual
Any ideas how to get it off? Does it twist off or straight pull? Needless to say it isnt budging

a coiled spring pin when clean and fresh should be abled to be pulled straight out with a good set of vice grips..... but yours looks pretty rusted so might be a bear before bobs your uncle. Combo twist and pull likely warranted.

That is a hardened roll pin that looks like it has been drilled into the flywheel to lock the nut.
Quite possibly a previous owners modification.
Hard bit will be removal as this type of pin is not really designed to fit into a blind hole (and they tend to be too hard to drill out)
Likely if you try and twist it it will snap, you may be lucky and the break will be below the flywheel face, but murphy's law suggests the nut will still be locked.
I would probably find a nut that will just slot over the pin, weld it to the top of the pin then use a slide hammer to provide a straight pull and get the pin out.
Worst case the pin will snap and you are in the same situation as the previous suggestion.

Definitely not factory. If it doesn’t break off when pulling with vice grips you should be fine. If it does leaving a stump inside, a decent air impact should shear it when twisting the nut off. Use a tight fitting 6pt socket.

I agree it's not factory, As always do as you feel is best, I'd suggest wire brushing everything thoroughly, then heating the nut, flange and pin, apply a good quality penetrant. Some slide hammers have an adapter which allows connecting a pair of vise grips. Worst case, it breaks then just impact the nut off, grind the remaining portion of the roll pin flush. Use the proper size thread restorer on both the nut and threads. When reassembling use Loctite #271, tighten to the proper torque and stake the nut to the threads. Good luck

Problem with using any sort of vise grip on roll pins is that when you pull them out of round they expand in one direction and the friction in the hole actually increases. If all else fails take a grinder and grind off the flange of the nut where the pin goes through and then undo with an impact wrench.

I think I would try the vise grip approach. If it failed, grind it flat then try drilling with a cobalt drill bit to get it below the nut flange. Possible a little heat concentrated on the pin would soften it for drilling with a hi speed drill. I would do all this before trying to force the nut to shear the pin stub.

could try an arcwelder as an 'induction heater'. run say 40-80 amps thru it for 1-2 seconds. The heat will softne the roll pin, then vicegrips will easily pull it out..
no welder ? grind flush, drill the pin
if there was enough of it ,a slide hammer could get it out.

Thank you folks, darned thing broke as I pulled it, gonna have to drill out stub. I'm field-stripping and rebuilding a boat engine built Sept 2000 after I found a chunk of metal in the oil sump, looks like the end of a shaft of some sort though motor ran fine. Not a lot of tools, lotsa mud...

sounds like 'Murphy' was helping you.
if that pin is (was ) a 'roll pin', you have(had) 1-2 maybe 3 tries before they break. You can pull them straight out, but bending them is a nono.
