Older PTO's with quick pins sets

Ok this is gonna sound like a crazy question.....

I have an older BUSH HOG TH60 that I have reworked and it now works perfectly.

It has a SQUARE pto shaft that has "sliding" locking pins on both ends (had to replace both springs/pins)

Here is the crazy question - does the smaller square tube go to the tractor and the female larger tube go to rotary mower? or reverse that - or does it not make a difference.....

And yes making sure the yokes are in correct alignment is easy to screw up if not paying attention!

On my mower, the larger shaft (the extending part) goes to the tractor PTO and the smaller shaft goes to the mower.

On the old beater mower we have, with square driveshaft, the solid square shaft end goes on the tractor. The clutch, errrr, what was the old clutch was on the gearbox. Make sure you have a shear pin or a clutch and that the clutch is not seized. Parts for old mowers are not cheap as ive learned.
Our hollow square tube has a groove in it, the solid square has a weld blob on one side so you can’t screw up the yoke alignment.

Why new shafts are triangular with a rib in one corner. The only fit one way. 'Yokes must be parallel to each other unless the tractor end is a CV (Double Cardan) joint.
