Check craigslist you might be able to get a good deal on an automatic system. I bought one a couple of years ago that was 10 years old, but had never been installed. Last winter the power went out when it was -20. Sure was nice to have the generator start in 20 seconds and the lights come back on without having to go out and hook up the old portable. The propane tank supplies the fuel so I don't have to go out in the cold and pour gas in the tank. Best thing is if I am away the wife can still have water, lights, and heat.

You don't need load sensing if your generator head is capable of power conditioning or you put power conditioning after the fact. You run the generator a little hot then at full load it comes to the proper RPM ratings.
