Im a young man and new tractor owner. Got a new L2501 just weeks ago, not even 8 hours on it yet. I made this mistake on like day 2 of owning the machine. Whats worse is I actually heard the extra whining from the HST and thought to msyelf "God this thing seems too noisy..." Thankfully I only got about 100 yards before I realized the error. I think the problem, at least from my perspective, is that I never actually use the brake on this machine. Just letting off the HST pedal stops the machine so quickly, that by the time you could even press the brake the machine is stopped already. So, I find myself using it like I do my lawn mower - as if no brake exists, and you just forget that there is a park brake on. Maybe they should make it like my zero turn where the engine will actually shut off when you try to drive and the brake is on. Its just so easy to make this mistake. Im trying now to form a new habbit when using the tractor to always pump the brake right after I start the engine.

It’s too bad the HST version of this machine didn’t move the brakes to the left side where they should be on an HST so you can use them as turning breaks. Many HST models have done this, all Bs, Grand L, and the bigger standard Ls.

I agree. I thought about that myself when I got my 2501. The uses for the brake pedal are extremely few imo. Even in High gear and running at 12mph, which is the top speed on my tractor, just taking your foot off the HST pedal stops the tractor almost instantly. The only real use for the brake is in holding the pedal in situations where you want to make sure you don't roll or move. Having a split brake pedal option is also kinda interesting given you cant actually use it with it being on the same side as the hst pedal. Thankfully, as mentioned, the brake is of so little importance to the operation of the tractor that its not a big deal. Even if it was on the left side I dont think Id hardly ever use it.
I rarely ever brake turn, I leave the brake pedals locked together as a rule. My R1's will really do damage to the hay I cut. I used a leaf switch from Digi-Key and mounted it so it contacts the brake pedal arm. When I have the brakes on, the idiot light is illuminated.
again, poor design by Kubota. Would be very easy to have a 'brake on' light on the dash.

I've done that several times. Now I make it a habit of hitting the steering wheel adjust pedal to let it swing all the way up before I get off the tractor. When I get back on I have to pull the wheel back down before I can drive. The adjust pedal is next to the parking brake pedal, so it reminds me to hit both. I really love the tilt steering wheel on this thing, but to be honest I thought it would be useless when I first saw it on there.
