Today I was using my L2800 and the engine oil light came on. When I looked I found oil on the right front tire, wheel, tie rod and all over the underneath of the tractor. Obviously the light came on because the oil is low, but I only have 11 hours on the tractor...IT's BRAND NEW! I plan on calling the dealer ASAP, but wondered if anyone has heard of this or might know where it might be coming from.

Sounds like the front crank seal blew. Rare but not unheard of on a new engine.

Not sure where the oil filter is on that one, but it could be loose. My L3410 oil filter is right over the right front axle, that is why I say that.

Thanks for the suggestions. The filter did cross my mind, but it seemed to be at least hand tight. As you said it's right above the axle and would have been the most convenient fix. Thanks, it helps to have a couple ideas going into the dealer.

Well the problem continues. I wasn't able to get to the farm much this year so I'm just now revisiting this issue. When the dealer look at the tractor he decided it was a loose filter. He tightened the filter and filled the tractor with oil, problem solved...or not. After he left I was putting the tractor away and it started making a knocking sound. Months later when I called the dealer I was told to let the engine run for a while as it was "probably just the engine warming up" (I thought it sounded like a rod knock). Eventually the dealer came back out and picked up the tractor. Today I called them and they said there was a tear in the oil filter seal which caused the oil loss and now a rod problem. They don't know the extent of the damage, but "it's serious".
This tractor has 11.3 hours on it and was purchased brand new. I've asked to have a new engine, but was told that it will more than likely be repaired (depending on the extent of the damage). They also suggested that I may have caused the damage by running the engine, even though I shut off the engine immediately after the engine light came on and called the dealer (who told me to run the engine and let it warm up). Sorry for the long story, but has anyone dealt with an engine issue like this in a tractor with so few hours? Is it unreasonable to expect a new engine on a tractor with 11 hours that cost as much as a car? How does Kubota usually handle these problems? The dealer said they don't want to "push" Kubota.

I think that I would "push" the dealer. Sounds to me like mechanical failure due to failed oil filter which should have been found when the dealer looked at it the first time. The dealer may not want to admit his oversight and failure to be thorough in his diagnosis, but you still should be covered under warranty and the engine should be replaced. Just my 2 cents worth.

That's a tough one, low oil pressure for any length of time could damage allot of parts. The rod or crank bearings will usually be the first to go though. At a minimum I would say replace crank, rods, pistons, and rings. Could have damaged the camshaft and lifters, they would have been lucky to have been broken in at that point. The safe bet is to hammer them for a new engine.

Thanks for the confirmation that my request is not crazy. I'll keep working on the dealer and cross my fingers. Do either of you know, do all warranty issues/conversations go through the dealer or can I contact Kubota myself?

Contact Kubota yourself. There is no "chain of command" when you're the customer and not getting satisfaction. I went to the VP of Chrysler before I got satisfaction on a fleet of Dodge maxivans with a fuel pump problem! It took 2 months.....
Document your conversations, dates, times & who you spoke to (by name) and go directly to a manager at KUBOTA if your deal continues to drag they're feet (but don't wait too long). You may have to start out with a customer service rep at KUBOTA but, none the less, you'll probably end up with upper management if you push hard enough. They don't want the "one bad apple" rearing up.
Be nice but firm & it'll take you far.

Thanks for the response Eagle Creek. I'll check in with the dealer to see where things are at, then contact Kubota myself if they are unwilling to install a new engine. Heck they're lucky I'm not asking for a entirely new tractor given the low hours, unproductive downtime and overall headache this has caused.

Just an update:
The dealer called me today and said that Kubota agreed to change out the engine with a new one. I'm happy that they are doing the right thing.
Thanks for all the suggestions/advice.

Great news re: the engine swap. Definitley the right thing to do.
If they hadn't and something else failed in the engine you probably wouldn't be nearly as patient and understanding the second time
Might have jeopardized brand loyalty on you end.
