I'm not sure if a diesel is more or less "forgiving" than a gas engine on this. My G2160 has not accumulated anywhere near 30 hours since I changed oil and filter early this summer. So pretty soon it will be relatively "dormant" for winter with a battery maintainer on it in the back garage. Part of me wants to change oil and filter prior to winter an then in spring, part of me says leave it and another part says just change the oil and then do O&F in early summer.
Not an oil thread BTW I know I will use Rotella T6 5W-40. More a question of timing. Since we had an incredibly dry late summer I barely used it. I've used it more in the last 10 days than I did in the previous 2 months

Change NOW - any water/vapor that has occurred in the past IS still in the oil and WILL sit there till it is started and circulated again.

Always best to park a machine WITH fresh oil rather than oil that has been placed through many cycles of heat and cold.

The cost to change is not that significant on that machine either.

Change now and run that oil until you change oil again, skip changing it at the beginning of the next season of use.

I recently parked my '24 F-450 for the winter. I changed the oil and filter back in May before starting a 3,600 mile road trip despite the local Ford dealer stating that they changed the oil and filter in February prior to offering it for sale. The truck is in an unheated garage, and the batteries are in the truck and connected to a battery tender. I put around 5,500 miles on the oil since the last oil change but I have no intention of changing the oil until next summer once I have 8k miles or so on it. The same is true for the Yamaha outboard on my boat. I changed the oil this summer after the 20-hour break in process and put in fully synthetic. That oil will be in that engine for the next 50+ hours regardless of how many seasons it takes to accumulate those hours.

Of all the things to worry about, changing oil before storing a tractor, truck, boat or any other vehicle doesn't register on my list.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

That T6 you have in there will be fine.

If it makes you feel better, well then, go for it…..it certainly wont hurt it…….but it’s kinda “overkill” if you ask me.

Different strokes, for different folks I suppose.

re: Part of me wants to change oil and filter prior to winter an then in spring

This make no sense or cents to me. With maybe 30hrs on the current oil and filter , you want to replace them now AND again in Spring, when it's had ZERO hours of use ? Maybe I read the post worng so can someone explain why 2 unnecessary oil changes ?
