Just when I thought this would be easy she threw a curveball and nailed me in the noggin. I started to take the l2850 apart again to split for oring replacement. When I drained the hydraulic fluid I found some metal chunks in it. They are pretty large steel parts. It looks like the corners of some gear teeth. They are about he size of a bic pin ink cartridge cross section. I didn't find any part numbers so it can't be that bad. I hope to get it split tomorrow after work and see what I can find out. So much for being quick oring change.

Post a picture of the metal pieces, could be as simple as a syncro.

Humm, I don't think gear, not shiny enough.
Synro teeth maybe?
I wouldn't be totally surprised if you can't find anything, there is a lot of parts that share that common fluid and for all we know it could have come from some where else, like the rear end, or the pump or ????
Pull it apart check the syncro's and all the gears and such, if you don't find anything and all seams well it probably is. ;)

Hopefully nothing. I didn't notice anything when I dropped the fluid before the first split job

If it's manual, those look like the tips of the internal hub where the syncro shift assy slides. Could also be the tips of the gear that the outer syncro hub slides on to, but i rarley see them broken, mostly just worn off.

The chunks are shaped like a gear tooth. I pulled the top cover off to look at the gear set. All the gears looked good. The srynchros looked fine. I also pulled and split the hyd filter. Found a washer and cotter pin that looked like they went a couple rounds with a gear. Looking at the pictures in the wsm it looks like it could be the tips of the pump gears. Might pull apart pump tomorrow. At least the tranny gears look good. Wasn't looking forward to messing around in tranny

I was thinking the same thing. ;)

But now that you show a cotter pin, the pieces look like ground up pin to me.
Yep pull the pump!
The gears tend to more brittle, and hard chromed, those piece don't look like that, but you have a better view than me.

Here is hoping it's just cotter pin scraps, But that leads to the question, how did they get past the filter, and how did the cotter pin or washer get in there????

I was thinking pin scraps also but the shape is wrong. The pin sides are rounded and the pieces have 3 flat sides

Here is a closer view. As for the source. I think he's about 3 foot tall.

I left the fill cap off while I had it split before. His cohort also in the picture might have been an accomplice. :)

Cute little cohorts :D them little buggers can be sneaky. Lost track of one of mine for about 10 minutes, while i was dealing with a younger one with the chicken pox. the little bugger found a cresant wrench and screw driver, and tore apart a push mower. Right down to the cylinders. Took me 4 hours to put the thing back together, the whole time alternating between cussing and laughining about it.:D

Well I started to put her back together tonight. I haven't had a chance to pull the hyd pump yet. Does anybody have any tricks for getting the shaft back thru the clutches. I tried for three hours tonight. Measuring the gap between the halves. It gets about 3/4 inch from being together then binds up. It looks like the shaft hits the clutch disk but won't go to the sweet spot.

Are you talking the shaft threw the main clutch disc?
Clutch alignment tool is the easiest way to do it.
But if your just 1/2" off sound like there is something else going on as the shaft should be well into the clutch disk by then, I'm thinking it might be as simple as the clutch linkage set too tight so it's trying to engage the clutch as it's going together.

I got lucky today and got it back together. I think it was hanging up in the pilot on the back of the crank. Either way it took a bunch of measurements and wiggling but she is back together. I have a few more panels to put on. Then it's run time. I hope it doesn't leak any more. I took the hyd pump apart to find out it was to much problem to take apart. Couldn't get bushings out to look at gears. Might just run it.
