Nice day today, time to service things in preparation for the not-so-nice weather that will be upon us in another month or two.

After replacing the genuine Kubota HST filter with a fresh one, I happened to glance inside:

It appears to me the Quality Control Manager needs some re-training. Wonder what happened?

Well that is pants.

What quality control...i thought these days manufacturing processes were very good so the quality control is by the consumer. Shame but the cynic in me wonders if it is the case.

Good job you actually looked at it before screwing it in.

Cut it apart, see if it is plugged and then collapsed.

I would show that to the Kubota folks and complain. Ask for a new filter and see if they do the right thing...

Highly unlikely. In the B7100 the screw-on hydraulic filter is a by-pass filter, in parallel with the strainer. So if the filter plugged up, the hydraulic pump would simply draw all fluid through the strainer, no vacuum build-up to collapse a filter.

Besides, I poked at that metal with a screwdriver. It's pretty stiff!

That's the first filter I've seen like that????

It's not a suction filter side filter, like the strainer, its a pressure side filter.

I would do like l35 said and I would cut it apart.

Ok, I did some more digging in the WSM, and the filter is definitely under pressure, not vacuum.

There's actually two different flow diagrams in the WSM, and they seem contradictory about the exact location of the filter. Both do agree that the hydraulic pump is fed via both the oil cooler and one of the strainers. It was this diagram that led me to believe the filter was set up as a by-pass filter.

While the hydraulic system diagram seems to indicate that the filter supplies the cooler with oil at "case pressure" (ie: limited to the setpoint of the case relief valve -- 28psi), the HST system diagram seems to indicate that the filter supplies the entire HST under "low pressure" from the charge pump (92 to 112 psi). I suspect that this diagram is more likely to be correct, as it appears the entire HST section was added to an existing, earlier, manual.

Don’t cut it open. Take it back to where you bought it.

Hopefully they’ll be able to send it off for an inspection. Also, in the event of any damage done, cutting it open could void that warranty. Heck, you might be able to get a replacement out of the whole thing too.
