I’m working on an excavator that has a no start condition. If you turn the key on the fuel pump comes on and the shut off solenoid activates but the gauge cluster does not come on and the machine does not turn over. I can just the starter and it will start. I’m at a loss I have cleaned all the ground on the machine and visually checked the wiring but the machine is in really good shape with no sign of chewed up wires. Please help
your machine or customers? how many hours? recent damage or repair history possibly related? any particular event surrounding onset of these symptoms? any operator reports if it wasn't yourself?
just what ___ the starter are you describing? tapping, bypassing ignition switch, remote starting??
when it starts by that method does the gauge cluster energize and stay on with key on? will the engine then shut off normally by the key? if cluster does come up, does it shut down when key is switched off?
have you checked all harness connectors? checking for loose or misaligned shells and latches. open any suspect connectors and inspect for bent, damaged, corroded, or pushed back pins.
also check harness clamps, bulkhead passages, insulators, etc. for pinched or stretched wiring. broken copper inside an insulated wire can have you jumping through your butt for days.
did you check the starter relay? ignition switch? do you have b+ everywhere it should be? does it have any hidden inline fuses or fusible links?
when you're checking grounds, are you removing, cleaning, and reattaching those connections ensuring clean metal contact?
not sure what factory manuals are available with troubleshooting and diag strategies but a wiring schematic and layout diagram would be helpful to make sure you don't overlook anything. start at the cranking battery and work your way completely around. you're bound to run into the culprit eventually.
good luck!
