I have a 4700, that till now has been trouble free. I put a new battery, cables and ends on it, turn the key and nothing. Getting fire to the starter any ideas? This is our first tractor so any help would be appreciated.

Was it starting before you installed the battery and cables? What was happening prior?

Search in here for info about safety switches (neutral, seat, clutch, brake etc). Many of those prevent them from firing if not adjusted right.. or user is forgetting to follow procedure right and has one actvated.

Are you sitting in the seat, in Neutral and foot on clutch or brake, when you try to turn it over?

Sorry am not familure with the 4700 specifically.

Too coincidental that it’s not starting immediately after replacing battery and cables. I would start by checking all connections, particularly if you crimped the ends.

Make sure you didn't accidentally knock the starter solenoid wire loose while changing/cleaning cables. It is the small diameter wire that either p[lugs on a spade terminal or has a ring end that attaches with a little nut on the solenoid.. To check function use a volt meter or test light to make sure the wire is energized when the start lever/key is in the "crank" position. If no juice to the solenoid wire when it is supposed to crank then likely a safety switch. The old timers would often test the solenoid with a jumper wire. But that's a good way to get run over if the tractor happens to be in gear (lots of folks have been!).

You need to be clearer with your description of the problem.

"Getting fire to the starter," ..... is the starter turning the engine over or is there just 12 volts present on the large starter terminal.

This will make a huge difference in finding what is wrong.

If the engine is turning over then it is not a safety switch.

I think you made a mistake for long term reliability with new cable ends and not new cables.

Adding a location to your profile helps as we then know if your have diesel fuel gelling from cold weather.
