A dedicated 31kw generator is an engine, fuel tank and fuel that have to be maintained for the little use they get. Unless your made of money the pto is far better haha but thanks for the info :)
Trust me I understand. I am trying to nurse the 8kw 30 year old stand by generator along for my house because I don't want to buy a new one. Around here I only need it a couple times a year, but when I need it I really need it. No water for me or stock, no heat etc. As long as you know the hazards of relying on your tractor you'll be fine.

To each his own. I don't need one of my tractors tied up running a PTO genny. Don't work in my situation at all and my standby runs everything and assumes the load in 45 seconds. Way less time than it takes to hook up a pto unit and hook to a transfer switch. In my case it's convenient and not something I need to be concerned with except it's yearly maintenance. Runs off my 1000 gallon diesel tank so no fueling either. Diesel delivery tank driver fills it.

If the engine has an issue though then I'm screwed, if a tractor won't start I can grab a different tractor. Pto gen is almost no matinance and costs a few thousand dollars plus runs everything. Stand by of that size and grade to handle the surges and demand would be 30-40k canadain plus yearly matinance and the fuel used just for matinance runs. If your power goes out alot then of course it's worth it but mine does not and when it does its never more than a day or two. I have nothing against standbys I just don't see the need in my case for a 30-40k engine to sit in my yard, hardly used and cost 1000-1500 in matinance costs each year. It's like you said to each there own but in my case a standby is not a good option.

I'm in the same boat, not power, no heat and in the spring that includes all the greenhouses. If it's a mid summer hurricane I have to hook up one of the walk in coolers to it as well and that's big load haha. I always check on it alot anyway. Gen gear box temp, fuel level, engine temp, gen frequency. All that fun stuff. Pto pumps are usually less of a duration so no worry about regen.
