Hello everybody,

Having followed this forum for the last three years, I finally decided to register.

For my work I live in Africa, but I own a 17th-century farm house in a little (pop. 150) village close to Bastogne in southern Belgium, with about 3 acres, mainly old meadow with a little bit of wooded area and some old apple orchard thrown in for good measure. To maintain that, in July 2018 I treated myself -after extensive research- to a BX231 (both for the Kubota quality and the fact that the Mrs. -being Japanese- also liked it very much…). I would have preferred a somewhat bigger model, but the place just doesn't allow it, what with its narrow passages and slopes (stability, by the way, is not the machine’s strongest point, so a set of 2” Brotek rear wheel spacers is waiting to be mounted next time I go on R&R).

The BX came with the usual add-ons: MMM, front loader and "wheelbarrow box" (= manual dump box for the 3-point hitch) for small cleaning-up and transport chores; an old road trailer (3300-lbs. capacity) takes care of bigger and heavier transportation needs. No need for a snow blower or plow: in January we got 16" of snow over a few days, but that is exceptional and never lasts longer than -in the worst/best case- a few weeks. Finally, last year a flail mower with pick-up and hydraulic dumping joined the family. Indeed, the meadow only gets mowed two to maximum three times a year, and the long grass left on the ground by the belly mower creates large dead spots, unless I spend a week raking… The flail mower on the other hand leaves a smooth, clean surface behind, perfect for new growth, while at the same time nicely taking care of brambles, bushes et.al.

Pictures to follow.

Interesting introduction! Welcome. It makes me wonder how many folks hang out on forums like this and never join..... Waiting for pictures of you tractor, implements and landscape.

Cool machine! It is similar to our BX's but it has some interesting features like the mirrors, locking bonnet, suspension seat and the rear hydraulics.

Thanks! First thing I did when inspecting the place before buying it was to check for any left-behind Tiger tanks in the basement...😜 Actually I am a bit too far to the south, and the Battle of the Bulge never got to the village. Next to the house though there is a little monument for some resistance fighters who got caught and deported/shot in the summer of '44.

Bastogne, cool!
Welcome aboard.

That's the one! Having driven an MF 595 (4x4) and an almost antique David Brown (2wd, no power steering), this is sheer luxury...

70 feet of old fence wire, embedded in 20 years of grass? No problem: weave a tow strap through it, attach to tractor, pull wire out. Move tractor 20 feet down the fence, repeat. Repeat again, done. A job that by hand would have taken half a day was done in 20 minutes.

And the flail mower with pick-up. The thing is rather heavy (around 750 lbs IIRC), and I not only have a bad back but am also rather smart and lazy  , so I put some heavy-duty casters under a pallet to easily move it around and attach it to the BX - no swearing, no sweat.

Does the flail mower just throw the clipping into to drum and then you dump it? I've never seen a grass catcher behind a flail mower.

D2Cat,

It indeed throws everything in the drum.

With a set of flail-extenders (which I also got) it turns into a scarifier - something on this year's to-do list, as twenty years without grazing or mowing have created a thick carpet of moss, dead grass and pine needles, which the flails alone can't remove. Plowing and sowing is not an option due to the slopes (run-off) and the soil being just a thin coat of earth over shale.

Daylight, you better get a grill guard on the front of your new tractor if you're going to be grabbing old buildings to tear down. Protect that grill before you wish you would have!

Actually there is one, but in the pictures it's hidden behind the front loader. Moreover, it's Kubota grey so doesn't stand out.

I consulted this forum extensively before putting in my order, which certainly saved me lots of errors and aggravation...
