By law any UAV weighing over .55 pounds (including payload) must be FAA registered and all registered UAVs regardless of size and including both commercial and recreational aircraft must be equipped and operated with a RID system.
So either there are massive numbers of uncatchable outlaw UAVs the size of trucks flying around at night with nav lights activated or large numbers of hysterical people are doing their best Chicken Little impersonation.

Eventually someone WILL acquire one of these,post 1,000 pictures all over the internet and the GUV will be in hot doodoo. There's NO requirement for the government to obey it's own laws.
and at night I'd bet at 200' away someone is going to identify it as a full size machine.
It is legal to fly your drone at night - with anti-collision lights. People saying these are 10' long, or more, have no perspective at night how far something is away and how large it is.
I'm betting its just some kids legally flying their drones (unless, of course, they get into restricted airspace).

Probably not legal. But it doesn’t identify as a drone
. Just a scale model of a blackhawk. 
Weight alone supposed to have certain government things in place for identification. But these are bought directly from manufacturers . Its pretty hard to tell from real when your more than 100-300 ft up.
The drone thing everybody is talking about is nothing new. Been going on for over 10 years. Just a good distraction for legislators and news agencies from real crap going on. You know the TV hounds in our state.

yeah ,another unenforceble law on the books.....
no diff than blowing through a stop sign....or driving without a license.

Kinda knew it. But just another government rule that is ignored.. hard to enforce. These models way over gram limit and zero…. ucks given. Compliance not happening.

Things were going just fine and everyone between Atlantic City and LA was having a good time then you show up. I suppose the next thing you want us to believe is following the very first time a news media talking head hyped a drone sighting ( drones are extremely rare) every drone hobbyist in the area launched theirs to get a looksee and join the fun.

My buddies and I have spent a lot of R&D time fabricating parts out of plastics, carbon fiber, laminated styrofoam and such. All to bring the crafts under the weight limit. A couple of the larger ones are (cough cough) modified so that they don't have the restrictions. It's not difficult or expensive. The big drones over NJ could simply be jailbroken drones from a 14 year old kid.
Side note- the most nefarious thing we do with them is use them to fly fireworks. We will tie off mortars or M80s using fuse as string. I'm sure it all carries the same sentence as shooting one down.

When purchased directly? No need to jailbreak…..cough.. at least i have heard. China sends TOYs in a nice brief case. 2 day air. No restrictions at all and little over faa weight too . I don't have experience with the Chinese versions. But, the risk of quality is not worth the possible reward IF they are any good.When purchased directly? It's much more satisfying to make/ mod your own. And know the quality of the parts.
I watched something on Utube last night, yeah I know,, good place to get information .
Anyways some guy with inside info stated that these are US drones, with nuclear detection equipment on board. Again, supposedly one or more of the letter agency's, think a suitcase nuke has been, or is being smuggled in the the US, and they are looking for it. And rather than cause mass panic they just let things go the way they are to cover the search up.

common sense says that...
as far as 'nuke', I remember the HUGE friggin 'scare' when radioactive steel was found going INTO a nuke plant !! After that every sample from every heat of steel made at STELCO had to be checked and recorded for radiation. I got the job of the 'design/build' of the system. Good old Radio Shack came to the rescue.
