Hi everyone! I'm Zack, new to the forum. I received a mid 80's L355SS from inhereitence. I am very mechanical with vehicles, but tractors I am lacking the knowledge. It was last ran about 3 years ago, then it was parked. When I turn the key all the way to the right, no lights come on the dash nor does it turn over when I turn the starter switch to the right. However, when I jump the starter it starts right up within 2 seconds and runs great. I am able to operate the bucket (L1720) and the box scraper, but does not go into forward or reverse. Anyone have an operating manual or a trouble shooting guide for one of these older kubota's?

Here is some pics of the tractor and attachments

Well i would say thats a good looking machine,if you could add a photo or two of all the shifters maybe we can help you figure this out. Any chance there is a range shifter on axle, left side of seat?

This is just an assumption, but check to the left of the seat for a lever. If there is one, then that would be your hi/low range selector. Make sure that it's either all the way forward or backwards. Center position is neutral.

If the tractors 4wd, your gonna have a third lever that's the 4wd selector. It runs on the same principle as your hi low selector. Except it's 2wd, neutral, 4wd. That lever is gonna be low and awkward to get too.

Like TJ said, pictures of all your levers will help us help you :D

Is there an electrical reason that it might not go into gear considering I have to jump the starter to start it. The key and starter switch doesn't do anything.

I have a video, if I find out how to post it or txt it to someone maybe that will help

FireNHunt, welcome. On your tractor there are no electrical switches involved to effect getting anything into any gear.

The lever with the numbers by it is the transmission, 1-2-3-4th. Then you shift the high/low lever to the high side and get 5-6-7--8.

The lever that comes up and bend horizontal on your left side is the 2 wheel drive/4 wheel drive lever. Pull straight up and push straight down to change it.

I'm pretty sure the lever on the left over by the fender is the hi/low lever. The remaining lever would be for the PTO.

Since the tractor has sat a while very likely the clutch disk is fused to the flywheel. ;)

It all looks like a nice pickup, some TLC required, but if you have some use for it you've done well, some more pics of that box blade/ripper would be good.......

WAIT WAIT WAIT

It's a SS, Shuttle Shift, are you putting the transmission in a gear and then moving the lever on the left on the dash up for forward down for reverse?

Yes, I tried that and nothing happened. It feels like it's in gear on the gear box, just feels like the clutch never engages. If the clutch was stuck in the engaged position I would think that I couldn't put it in gear when the motor was running. Or I could put it in gear while it wasn't running and the bump the starter, causing the tractor to lurch forward. Neither of those happen, so I'm assuming the clutch is stuck in the not engaged position. Seems odd for that to happen though.

It sounds more like the shuttle portion is not engaging.

See if the PTO spins, if it does then the problem most likely is in the shuttle.
If the PTO doesn't spin then it's more likely in the mechanical clutch.

Just an update. The pto did not spin when clutch was engaged.

I will be splitting it apart and replacing the clutch, just waiting on the parts in the mail.

Thanks for the help guys, and lance (007kubotaguy) who took the time to talk with me on the phone.
