I am attempting to repair a hydraulic leak from the rear pto cover on my 2018 BX2380. I removed the cover and now the 11T select shaft is out further than it should be, causing the cover to not fully seal. I followed the service manual on how to remove and repair the gasket.

I also spoke with a tech at my local kubota dealer and he said to pull the shaft completely out and try to line it up, which doesn’t make much sense to me. Has anyone ever ran into this? Pictures for reference.

I am thinking the end of the shaft may be splined and the tech is wanting you line the shaft spline with its female mate to slowly rotate the shaft while gently pushing in.
I would start this way rather than an immediate extraction. Others who know this machine will post but try this while waiting.

You have probably dropped the shaft out of this bearing:
Try pushing on the bottom face while pushing in and twisting.
might be enough to realign.
Pulling the shaft all the way out, or even too far out would be BAD.
The parts would simply fall inside the transmission and you would have to disassemble to get to them.
If you've pulled it too far and Collar #50 has dropped then you're going to need to get into it.

This is why you search the forums and ask questions before taking it apart to learn from other's mistakes. It was last month when someone else posted about the same issue.

Looking at the drawing it's kind of a bad design....
Unless you remove the rear casing PERFECTLY straight , the bearing(#040) could stay in the case AND pull the shaft(#020) out with it.
Man that makes for a bad 'domino' effect.....

it kinda looks like the rear casing goes on first, then the shaft goes in from the front side, then gears, needle bearings ?? At least the needle bearing look 'caged' unlike Willy transfer case intermediate gear needle bearings........

That’s exactly what happened.. When the rear pto cover was removed “40 bearing stayed in the cover and it pulled out some.

If I searched a forum before doing everything I’d never get anything done lol. Honest mistake.

I bet 'shim'? #050 has dropped down, off the shaft...if so ,big sigh......
Unless some magical wiggling of the shaft can get it poked back into the front bearing, I think you're in for a days labour to put 'Humpty Dumpty' back together again.

This seems to be a reoccurring problem with the BX23S tractors.

It's because people insist on using teh BX for duties other than lawn mowing.

It's not built for actual tractor work! Stop hurting the little tractors, plz!

I guess I’m missing the obvious but it looks like that oil seal is installed from the outside. Is there some reason why the rear cover has to be removed in order to replace that oil seal?

Just wondering if there’s not a way to remove it and replace it without pulling the rear cover off.

The workshop manual shows tape around the splines on the PTO shaft to protect the seal when it is installed…

Curious what I am missing.

The oil seal was not leaking the gasket around the pto cover was.
