Something we do every year, and really enjoy. The free range flock provides eggs for many families and the joy we get from their antics is priceless. I've been doing this for almost 50 years. The extra roo's are always great Sunday dinners. I enjoy knowing where my food comes from, and the fresh eggs are enjoyed in the morning most days. Country life is hard to beat for those that enjoy it.

I would have some chickens, but they would not last very long with all the varmints around here.

We also have our fair share of predators here too. We always keep a eye open and have a shotgun loaded near the patio door. The worst are the Bobcats when they have young that are being weaned. They sneak to the edge of cover and jump out if a hen gets close enough. The number of Bobcats here have really increased and quite a few are caught by neighbors that trap them.

Coyotes are what I hate the most. They probably would not be a problem if one put up their chickens since coyotes only come out at night around here. I have never seen one during the day, but they're here. They took two of my cats. I simply hate them.

But, there are also plenty of raccoons and possum here. I also catch a bobcat from time to time on my game camera.

We also have all the preds you mentioned Nic. We had a yote come and jump against the chicken pen door trying to get it to open during the middle of the day....prolly had pups to feed and being outside without a weapon, I managed to scare it off.
The good Lord created chickens to free range and that's when they are the happiest and provide the best eggs. Always on predator patrol here.

Well, there are many things that think chickens are tasty. I also forgot about the hawks and owls. Plenty of those here too.
