Received my oem glow indicator (glowing nichrome wire peephole on dash) - first impressions: the oem wire is easily twice the diameter of the Amazon unit - we shall see . . . .

If you have a multimeter, measure the resistance (ohms) of the new unit.
Since the indicator's main function is to drop the voltage going to the GP's the resistance will be more important than the diameter of the wire.
The length of the heating wire is also a big factor when making a visual comparison

You can't accurately measure the resistance as it changes when the wire heats. If you still have the original check the terminal ends. They frequently oxidize to the point they won't pass current. They can be cleaned and put back into service.

My original was broken (wire) in the middle - replacing the nichrome wire could be easy with the right approach
