Moisture is something to consider as well. Had a real dry summer several years ago and the pile dried out. No compost that year. Should have hosed the pile down or covered it up with a tarp. Live and learn.

New garden update. Just hilled and fertilized my small 12'x70' plot of Silver queen! Hard to tell but most is knee high with a few strugglers. Now if I get tassels and silk I'll be in business! I also opened up another 12'x50' plot for next year's potatoes, onions, garlic, and an egg plant and squash or two for my wife. Two huge piles of wood chips are breaking down nicely for the pre winter application. My self watering pots with tomatoes, peppers and cukes are doing well! I love gardening. It makes the soul happy! Next year will be bigger and better!

Everything was planted outside about 4 1/2 weeks now and doing well! Lots of flowers and hanging baskets too!
Did you hill the corn with a bedder or by hand? Looks great.

Bet the coons will appreciate your 'hands on' help ! Wife did corn one year, Man she was 'upset' the morning she went to harvest,saw the coons had beat her..'taste tested' nearly EVERY cob !!!

Ironic you mention this, the last time we grew corn the deer got to it.... this year plated corn again... well see how it goes, I don't think the dog will let them near it but we'll see.
Heck this year my corn is not going to make it to the coon stage. It started to come up nice and then individual plants have started to disappear. Lots of them, like most of a row. Between voles burrowing and attacking from below and this morning I saw a squirrel going down the row and I found 8 inch plants keeled over with a little bite taken out of the stalk at ground level. Grrrr. I have improvised some row covers and put out mouse traps but I am not optimistic.
Every year is different. Haven't seen flea beetles, but I suppose they are just waiting for me to pull the row covers off the eggplants.

Can't use the ".22 and a flash light", when you are not at home!The best cure for coons is a .22 and a flash light. I tried the lights and radio but they would just be dancin with the strobe and music

Well, It was my first-time growing corn this year, and it turned out to be a great crop of Silver Queen! I picked a total of 242 ears from four 50 foot rows! All my friends, relatives and neighbors all ate good white sweet corn this year! I think its hands down the best sweet corn I ever ate. Unfortunately, it doesn't last long after being picked. I froze 5 dozen ears. I cut both ends off took off some, not all of the husks and vacuum sealed 4 ears per bag. I know it won't tase like fresh, but it will be enjoyed over the winter! NEXT YEAR...Im planting "Gotta have it" white sweet corn! It can sit out for a week and not lose its flavor. It's also sweeter than Silver Queen!
As far as critters! I had a 4 foot fence around it with zero damage except for Japanese beetles! They did minor leaf damage, but really chowed down on the silks. Lucky for me the corn was already pollinated! I think between the fence and the scent of my dog the critters wanted nothing to do with it. The deer did level the neighbors Hasta's within 30 feet of the corn. The squirrels were happy with the neighbor's bird seed, I guess! I was surprised to see many many honeybees were in the tassels and also the Hummingbirds loved it too!
I can't wait till next year!

Ya done good son ! My corn grew and this was the first year I got any, peppers crapped out and so did the maters,,, HOWEVER the butter nut squash went nuts! I did the 3 sisters this year, beans never germinated, in fact all the seeds I got from RK didnt grow. Enjoy the garden it might be the only way we have things to eat before to long.
It's too bad that the beans and some of the other seeds you got didn't germinate. Have you tried contacting the supplier to see if they have any advice or can offer replacements? Sometimes there can be issues with the seed quality or germination rates, but hopefully they'll be able to help you out.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your gardening experience - it's always helpful to hear about what works and what doesn't for different people. I still play around with a plow in my wife's garden and my wildlife plots.
You really break up the hard pan, bring up new soil, and burry debris. Before the plow I'd plant a cover crop like peas and oats the disc them under in the spring. Now I spread manure in the area, fall plow, let the winter snows settle it then run the tiller in spring.
