New Barn any ideas ?

Hey there gang Im wanting to build a new barn next spirng and was wanting to know what you guys think of all the barn choices. Im trying to decide between wood or steel I want it to look like a barn not an industrial building. I like the look of wood but steel may be easier to maintain.The county will give me a streamline permit for wood ag building , permits for steel will be minimal " go figure county pushes wood buildings" in high fire area. Do any of you have exsperence with steel kit buildings? Im wanting to do most the work myself not to cut costs I just like keeping busy and I'll be retired then. my budget is going to be $80,000 looking at 40'x 80' or somewhere close to that size with center door being 12' h. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Im located in Ventura county Calif so I need to think of shipping cost on steel buildings....Thanks guy and safe tractoring to all . Dan

I think a Mortons steel building would be the way to go. They make some sharp looking buildings.

4 roger on the Morton building I had a 30x40 lester put up and its not worth what I paid,, several people I know had Morton building put up,, its like night and day. Here in the coal country I think the steel builds are the way to go, but they do get rather warm in the sunshine. Now they can be built almost way you want and done up in almost any ginger bread you can think and the siding has a ton of different looks. NOW what are you going to do with this barn, critters, storage, tractor/cars/trucks ect? Also check on the ins for steel vs wood you might be surprised in the difference in cost. Were I doing it again I would do a Morton and not wood,, just MHO,,,, Eric hit it right on the head there

I'm also considering building a barn next year. I understand that when it comes to animals, steel buildings are better hygienically, as they're easier to clean.

The only thing I can see might be a problem with critters in stalls would be them pushing, I had an Arab mare that loved to lean,, on any thing or anybody,, So I would use 1 inch plywood around the outsides of the stalls and in BC I think that might help keep the cold off them too, and the other thing is the acid/ammonia/salt in the urine, it may have a detrimental effect on the steel unless you would put it on a footer raised up say one block. This is just MHO you understand, but I would not hesitate for one second about putting my horses in a steel building. Now I just have to keep my baby daughter from surprising me with another Arab filly

No critters they are in the old barn going to use it for a Peterbuilt show truck ( 1976 ) tractors 5th wheel and a shop, talking to my brother today and he's thinking bigger by 20' in length

I'd do steel then, based on the useage. I'd also go 12' ceiling.

You going to concrete the floor? I'd pour it thick and allow for a car lift in case you want one. Plus you don't want the Pete cracking it.

The land I bought at the first of the year has a 40x80 steel building on it. The PO poured the floor and also a foundation about 12" tall by 10" wide all the way around. This is what the 6x6 posts sit on instead of being in the ground. They'll never rot that way.

all I know is that its one of the few with a V8 cat instaed of the straight 6, Not sure on the 379 trucks are my brothers thing , but its a sweet rig

Well here is a picture of what the new barn is going to look like 12'6" high door in the center and both other doors regular highth. Barn is going to measure 42' wide and 80' long that will give us a total of 3360 sq '.Barn will be delivered in the spring pictures will follow going to poor slabb soon as possible , but that may be a bit seeing how the county has there nose in the project.
