OK 8 inches,, hay fields get cut to say 3 to 4 inches, and they grow back well,, I would think that mowing it down and letting God and the rain bring it back and then just maintain it after that,, put the horses, goats, sheep cows in ,what ever and they will take care of it from there, only need some dress up from time to time. Trying to maintain 8 inches seems kinda silly to me, but then what do I know

The idea of mowing it high is to eliminate the flower so seeds don't keep the weed growing, eliminates the need to spray chemicals, leaves the leaf of grass for critters to eat.

UPDATE: Need to mow but leave 8" standing

Thanks for all the input. My BIL has a Woods RD990X he's test driving. It can be adjusted to 7" using factory holes and bushings. He left me take a few passes on it and it was pretty impressive. I was cutting about 6" off of the grass and it distributed nicely. The deck is extremely robust. His L4740 handles it very well.

The arms for the wheels are 1/4" wall square tube - probably 2x2. Wheels are much larger than on any of the RFM's I've seen. The three blades are like small bush hog blades. Each of the three blades consists of a round plate with two free-swinging blades. One of the pics is with the guards removed when he was cleaning it. The belt is a real wide double V belt.

The 8" height is something he came up with that takes into account maintaining the 4 or 5 areas he allows the cows into for grazing on a rotating basis. The meadows are new, if that makes a difference. He is a man who generally has everything figured out, so although I don't completely understand how it all works, I'm sure he has reasons for it all.
